Primer pocket swaging

Forgive if this has been discussed, I could not find what i am looking for by searching.
How does a press mounted swage work for reducing primer pocket depth so a small pistol primer can be used in place of a large one? Does it "mash" the web down? If I could see a drawing or picture of one I am sure I would be able to make one up. The RCBS swage sets I see are for removing military staked crimps right....or do they make a version to modify the pocket depth? Their web page does not explain.
regards

I believe the "simple" swages can reduce Depth of
primer pocket.
But NOT reduce diameter of pocket from Large to Small.
That would take some large displacement of brass.
There have been Shims made to reduce diameter from large to small diameter pocket.

The RCBS swage only deals with the crimp found in military ammo.  Never heard of trying to swage a large pocket down to a small.  I doubt it can be done.  There's too much metal to be moved.

I have converted Berdan-primer 7.5x55 Swiss brass to take small rifle primers by machining the crown off the fired primer, drilling through the anvil to make a new flash hole, and then swaging the shank of the Berdan primer against the walls of the pocket using the RCBS swage tool.  This works.  I can't say I've reloaded any of the 40 cases I modded more than twice, but in none of them did the sleeve formed by the old primer shank come loose.

Meacham used to sell a setup for swaging large rifle primer pockets to large pistol, but that's the only similar thing I've heard of.

I made a big typo.....want to go from large rifle to large pistol.
Will look at the Meacham design if still av available. I would like to make one though since the machinery is sitting here.

Yeah they took it down some time ago.  I would have liked to have had one.

Kermitool, the maker of Hoke sights, used to make the tool you're asking about. I'm not sure if he still does or not. I have one of these and will take some pictures later today and post them along with the instruction sheet. I can supply measurements also if desired.

I shoot large pistol in my cast bullet guns all the time
they ignite just fine in the LR pockets

I had Kermit  make me  one of those  years ago,  you can use the RCBS to swage it back to Lg Rifle. If you shoot LP in a LR pocket it comes back .013 and will eventually  damage your breech block.

You can also just use a primer pocket uniforming tool to get it back to Large Rifle primer depth. CBA the issue really has nothing to do with ignition but destroying the breech block face. The difference in depth and approximately 10 thousands from large rifle to large pistol causes the hammering and destruction to the breech block face by the large pistol primers moving back. I have seen more than one breech block destroyed from extended use.

Die body :
                  3.500 long
                  stepped down/threaded portion 1.175 long, threaded 7/8 – 14
inside of body treaded 1/2 - 20  .750 deep at top of body
body OD .960 & ID .530 except for threaded portion at top of die body

Stem:
4.5 long
            threaded portion 1.540 long, threaded  ˝ – 20
smooth plunger portion tapers from .365 to .330 & then steps down for another .150  to .200 OD
(this was ordered for a .38 caliber but it works fine on .40 & .45 caliber cases also)
the hole in the end is a tight, sliding fit to the .078 pin on the shell holder part

Shell holder/pin:
basically an RCBS shell holder with two  Allen screws to hold the .078 pin in place
with a .200 OD by .100 high extension

Hopefully that will help. If you need something more let me know.

Some of us BP freaks use a heavy card wad in the primer pocket, cut in as the primer is seated to help make up the
difference in LP vs LR primer height.
So far no breechblock set back or "dent" in a lot of rounds shot thru my orig HiWall 40-65 or my Ruger No 1 40-72
