For those of you that reform cases such as 40-50 SS from 30-40 Krag, which do you prefer to work with, Remington or Winchester brass. Or macht nicht?

I prefer the Remington for reforming.
BUT, the WW brass generally holds more powder.

More powder = thinner brass. That may/or may not be a good thing/problem.

I haven't seen any new Winchester Krag brass in years. I recently got some marked 30 Army. I wonder how old it is.
You now have Hornady brass available also.
40-50 can also be made from 303 British brass but it has less capacity than Remington brass.

My preference is Win & Rem. Win for larger case capacity & uniformity after fire-forming and 38-50 and Rem for uniformity.

Never had a problem with the thinner Win cases long-term (50 loadings?) in any cartridge. In fact, they were my preference for hi-power once they were fire-formed and weight-sorted and remain my preference for BP.

Just surfed a couple of the 'usual suspects' (Natchez & Precision Reloading to name a couple) and plenty of new 30-40 brass available in various flavors (Hornady, Winchester, Remington, Captech). All are listing it for under $30/50 plus shipping.

I picked up a bag of 30-40 brass at auction last spring ,around 7# with about half WRA 31 he other half Western 29. Does anything special need to be done with brass this old. Some appear to be new.after deprime. I was going to neck up to 338 & 40 caliber.

My 40-60 Maynard (Krag) barrel was chambered for minimum headspace using Winchester brass and Remington brass would not chamber due to thicker rims by the depth of the head stamp.

Not sure about 40cal, but I neck mine up to 38-50 in a single step so .338 should be easy. Annealing is a good thing, as well.

Most of my .40-50SS is formed from Rem. brass. No issues with it.

Thank you all for your responses. I ordered 4 bags - 50 ea. of Remington brass from Duck Creek off your recommendations, good price at $28 a bag. Denny the owner said he also had several bags of Winchester 30-40 Krag left, $26 a bag. Got a couple of bags each of 32-40 & 32-20 Winchester and 50-70 Starline from him earlier this summer, his prices are very good.
Again, much thanks for the responses. - John

I enjoy dealing with Denny at Duck Creek! He's a great resource for brass, and ships very fast!

There is a variance in each company's brass from year to year and with the smaller quantities of our chosen calibers, this may actually be lot number by lot number. Some years Winchester brass is more malleable to form and other years Remington brass is more malleable.

You find the caliber you need and work with the annealing and forming required. As several have stated, Winchester brass is thinner and holds more powder for black powder loads.

I am currently seeking .25-20 WCF brass and it is out of production or too expensive. Visiting Starline in Sedalia, MO and talking to them, my best course is setting aside enough brass for all future needs.

I am annealing their .32-20 WCF brass to use in competition and isolating this brass from all other brass. I have a semi-production annealing setup that eases the pain.
