Lyman Mould Block Handles

I have always liked the Lyman mould block handles so I made a set of brass mould blocks to fit a set that I have. The reduced size of the blocks are a real joy to cast with and the brass mould blocks turn out beautiful bullets  I then cut the cavity for the Mos 120 gr. Spitzer clone to see how it compares to the original Mos bullet mould that I also have.

You need to go into the custom mold making business! It's quite stunning!

By the way, I'm also a fan of the old Lyman handles. They fit and sit so well in the hand and give a better balance point to handle (not a pun) the weight of the mold.

Looks like more fine work, sir!

I happen to know an old fool, who - when he was a much younger fool - had one Lyman handle on which the wood insulators wouldn't stay in place. Being a real smart feller' he drilled down through them and drifted in a large aluminum pin on each side. Now he gets burned by the aluminum pins which are flush to the exterior of the handles. He is reminded of his foolishness each time he uses those mold handles, but hasn't been smart enough to do anything about it for 20 years or so!

Foolish, and a slow learner to boot! Grin

The mould actually looks bigger in the picture than it really is. The light weight and more importantly the balance does indeed make it a real pleasure to use. It's actually a real joy to cast with instead of it becoming more of a chore.

Just Jim thanks for the heads-up on the Aluminum Pins. I have used high heat resistant epoxy in the past and it has worked out very well.

JOHN:
I picked up a mould some time ago that had handles like the Lymans, but were aluminum.   Bad idea, as even the WOOD was hot with the high-conductivity of the aluminum.   I consider cutting them off and putting in stainless or other rods which will be cooler.

I use an Ove Glove to cut the sprues and to place the bullets in the order as cast. Every once in a while they will show up at the dollar store and I picked up five the last time they had some in stock.

How I keep track of the order as cast. I can pickup the bullet place it in it's proper spot as the sprue is still freezing. It takes me about forty minutes to cast a 120 bullets and typically out of the 20 extras 10 or so will have visual defects / rejects. The goal to always end up with 100 match quality bullets and they are also shot in the order as cast.

Not too sure oven gloves would be something I would want to weld with, but the welding gloves will serve both uses well, read better. A good pair will last a long time! Have served me well.
