Avoid this source for .32-40 RH brass

AmmunitionArtifacts.com

Workmanship was just fine, but head dimensions ahead of the rim are too large to chamber. I have a lovely Hepburn in about 95% condition, but these cases won't chamber the last 3/8" or so.  Measure .456" at the head, should be no more than .453" according to COTW. Seller says he has no way to make them any smaller, and I don't feel like dressing them all down by hand without some kind of accommodation in the price.  I guess they're going back for a refund, which was the only recourse offered.  Sad

John,
I have had perfect success in my tight chambered 32-40RH with brass formed from R-P 303 brit brass.
I just measured:  Base dia at rim is 0.449-0.450",
My fired brass at max measures 0.451-0.452"
Cases were simply formed in Full Length C-H sizing die
followed by appropriate trim to length. then Fired, then rechecked and trimmed as needed. My rifle ( not a Real Rem Hep rifle), is 8 twist Hart barreled Brg BPCR, with tight chamber done by Mike Lewis, and a Dan Theodore design tight neck match reamer.( I own the reamer) In fact, I do a neck turning after fire firing to exactly fit with  0.308"sized bullets
I recommend you do a Cerrosafe cast of your chamber
and up into the bore an inch or so. Then you know exactly
all the measurements of the chamber to exactly match case length. Also give you the groove diam and freebore and throat dimensions so you can determine bullet diameters to use.
I found a fixed load of WLR primer/ 15.5 gr 4227 under Lyman 311299 cast 9+1 ww/lino w/o gas check/with foam wad at base of bullet shoots Very well in my rifle. I have shot several Schuetzen matches with this load in my rifle. With bench/scope, shot into 240s.

Thanks Arnie

You had sent me several specimen cases to try. Only one had to be dressed down slightly at the head to chamber. The gun will smoothly chamber .453" and under. The R-P and RCC cases measure .450" He formed his from PPU brand .303's which apparently run large.  I could have spent the time to dress them all down individually, but with out the incentive of a price break for all my extra work, I decided not to mess with it and just returned them to seller.

Bore slugs at .309". Until I have sufficient brass to work with I won't know if any neck turning is necessary or not.  I just reordered from BACo. After my initial call, they found inventory they didn't know they had in stock (I was originally told it was on indefinite backorder) He called me back, measured the brass (R-P .303 stock) at .448" or so, and will ship immediately.  Should be cooking up some loads real soon!

Meanwhile, working on these for the Grayling Michigan Historic Artillery Match 9/7-8

Thanks for the info. Never purchased brass from them, but I'm glad to know it's oversized and wont fit a typical chamber. Saves me the same trouble.

My first comment was "Workmanship was excellent" but for this **particular ** cartridge, the seller used poorly dimensioned basic case (PPU brand)  and his tooling doesn't allow him to correct the problem.  He is going to refund my purchase price, which I also stated.  Would you rather the rest of the association were not alerted to avoid **this particular case** from this seller?  In future, should I choose to purchase from him again, I will ask for critical dimensions before I spend my do-re-mi. And maybe seller, now that he's aware that there's a problem,
will mention that his brass for this caliber may not fit all original chambers.

John,
Forgot to ask you if you have a set of 32-40 RH dies on hand?
What brand?
As previously said my C-H full length die works perfectly
for forming brass from the R-P 303B to a good fit in my tight chamber. The die set is labelled "32-40 Rem Hep Target"
I actually use a Forster Bench Rest die in 30-40Krag to do a good concentric job of seating bullets for fixed loads.

Arnie, yup, I have a set of C-H dies, but they aren't capable of swaging case head all the way to the rim.

Spud, it's a 10-pounder Parrott Rifle. Brass cup expands into gain twist 3 groove rifling fueled by 1 lb of GOEX 1F.  There's a YouTube link in my post of the gun in action at the 2017 Grayling match. We fired a perfect score on the 4'x6' target at 1000 yd distance. My YouTube channel is jwellsgnr if you want to see more of the gun in action.

John in PA, your post is one that is valuable to the shooter of that caliber, and is also complimentary towards the dealer's workmanship and his treatment of you in regards the return of your purchase price. Good for him, and good for you both- You get attaboys Smiley Smiley Smiley
As to the 'other' John, he has gone off about the worth of many products here. Things like barrels and molds come to  mind. So, how he manages to criticize you is truly laughable.

Definitely a hard caliber to find a good fit in some guns. I don't know if Remington had variations in their chamber sizes. Mine is the first one I've fooled with in a (very) long line of single shots. I checked with BACo before I  had them ship, and the salesman was kind enough to mike the cases, R-P .303, and he measured .448" just ahead of the rims.

Here's to hoping...   Cheesy Wink

And if the necks are too thick, I might just cheat and lightly size loaded rounds just enough to chamber. I have proper .309" bullets, and really don't plan to shoot any matches, just for personal enjoyment.

John,
The process of neck turning is not really that hard to do.
I have a lyman trimmer, and got an outside neck turn accessory for it.
A bit of setup and once thru the neck turning process, no more a  minute or so per case. Done, and then you save the process of resizing the loaded ctges to fit chamber.
One of the advantages of outside neck turning is you end up with concentric thickness of the neck.

Hope you find the brass works as is after forming, fire forming.

What was the source of the neck turning adapter? I can't find any such critter on Lyman's website. Aftermarket?

I have a vintage Lyman model (grey powdercoat) with a drill adapter.  Uses universal case chuck with spring loaded jaws. Looks pretty much like the current orange one as far as I can tell.

Also have a motorized C-H case trimmer. Uses regular shell holders.
