RCBS Easy Melt Pot

Anyone been using the RCBS Easy Melt pot. Their newer model with the PID controller built-in. If so, what do you think? Working well for you?
Thanks.

I have had one for close to a year.  It works flawlessly.  the 850 max temp is more like 825 on my thermometer, but it is consistent.  The only minor complaint is that with my other pots I could get the solidified remainder of the melt out when cold fairly easily.  Not so with this pot.  I had a very nice Rapine pot which died.  It had the element embedded in ceramic and was slower to get to temperature.  The element burned out and I haven't looked at getting it fixed.  I bought a 10lb Lyman mag dipper which I still use for 30-1 while the RCBS stays full of 20-1.

I don't think the bullets know which pot they were cast in though.

I have used mine a little.  It holds the temp very well even dropping the sprues in as I cast.

You have to let it power down; ie, let  the fan blow to cool the electronics.  It takes about an hour.  Probably be sorry if you forget and unplug it.

I'm not sure it is any better than my old Lyman Mag 20.  Time will tell if it lasts as long.

I agree with Jack on the getting the last of the melt out.  Not as easy as the older style pots.

Overall, I like it.

Thanks. Was using a PID controller on a 20# Lee pot, but to duplicate that today would cost more than the RCBS. Ordered one for $124, delivered, so should be good.

I'll look at drilling some holes in the sheet-metal top plate to promote air flow so don't have to leave the fan on when cooling down.

I bought one recently and so far pretty happy. Temps are consistent and generally within 10 degrees of a thermometer.

In looking at a lot of reviews and complaints, failure of the electronics was high on the list.

RCBS was pretty clear that this is do to heat soaking by not leaving the fan running during cool down. I think they recommend not unplugging until temp is 150.

Mine works very well and keeps a constant temp. On a previous post here people said the plastic fan blades would melt if you unplugged it too soon.

SSShooter,
I would Not drill holes in the top plate. Too much chance for an accidental spill or "slosh" of molten lead to get down into the innards /wires, etc of the pot.

Glenn,

I took the top off. It just got in the way. I have a small DC fan pointed at the pot to assist in the cool down. Even with that, it takes an hour+ to cool down to 160*. As you know, PID controllers are heat sensitive, so don't get in a hurry to watch it cool down. Smiley Wink...................

Mine is supposed to arrive tomorrow. Will 'check it out' and see what I think about the best way of getting some air flow thru the controls during cooldown. I have a small 120vac muffin fan (think of the fan on the power supply of your computer) that I might plug into a timer to run for an hour after casting. Maybe doing the same with the internal fan wiring would be enough. Will let you know.

I wonder if there is a way to attach a Heat Sink to the
PID relay to draw off heat faster during and after shutdown,
of course leaving the fan running .
Depends on how the relay is mounted. IF mounted to the
enclosing sheet metal case, a heat sink could be mounted to the outside of the case
opposite the relay. I did that with a PID mounted in a metal lunch box

If you want it too cool faster, empty the pot.

I have no idea why having an external auxiliary fan would be an advantage over the internal fan.

Exposing the electronics external contamination or damage isn't a very good idea. It will violate the UL listing.

For me, the speed at which it cools is of no import. Only care that I can turn it off and walk away and not have to 'hang around' for an hour or more to allow it to cool. Will find out shortly as should have running in the next day or two.

Firstly, the idea of drilling holes in the pot cover to aid cooling when you are finished casting beggars belief when you can simply swing the plate out of the way to achieve the same result.
Secondly, you don't have to hang around while waiting for the pot to cool down, you could go somewhere for a day or so even, and when you come back the pot will be stone cold, only a small fan will be still running which will hardly bankrupt you with  an excess power bill.
I bought my RCBS pot about 6 months ago and it has worked as advertised, but honestly, I have not noticed any great improvement in my bullets, or accuracy on the target, than what I got with my 20 lb Lee pot if I payed attention  to the temperature, and controlled it simply by turning it on and off at the wall, hardly rocket science.
Mike.

Glenn, make sure you check temp with a thermometer, alot of these are off quite a bit.
