I am using about 18. 5 grains by weight of 4227 in my 40-70 with a darr 375 gr bullet. I am getting excellent results.

I have a 40-60 also and am interested in the suggested loads-- are the above listed powder charges for breech seated or fixed ammo;  if the former would i drop the charge a grain for so for fixed ammo? thanks

I owned one of Claude Rodericks Ballards in 40-50SS and I used 19.6 grains of 4759 and a Beveridge 335 grain nose pour mold.  Excellent results.

When did they quit making SR 4759?  I have 16lbs left.

A 40-60 Maynard case formed from a 30-40 Krag brass will hold approximately 76 gr of Wano 2f drop tubed to fill the case completely to the top, I just tried it.
However in my CPA 40-60 the most accurate load has been around 60 to 62 gr with a 400 gr BACO money bullet. I have tried 75gr  with that bullet breech seated and it was not as accurate
60 gr under that bullet will give you an average MV in the order of 1160 fps, 71 gr will give you an average of 1228 fps, hardly worth the extra powder and the hassle of breech seating, unless there is a decent improvement in accuracy, which in my experiments, there wasn't.
Just perhaps when the cartridge was originally developed they experimented with different charges and settled on 60 gr, hence the name, 40-60.

Just as a matter of interest 71 gr of Swiss 1.5 gave an average MV of 1306.5 fps with an ES of 11 fps. For me the Swiss powder has produced more MV and slightly better groups, but at A$130 per KG compared to Wano at A$90 per KG hardly worth the extra cost, also it is not sold where I reside and obtaining it is a hassle.

I did try lighter loads, down to 55 gr from memory, I had a quick look through my Chrony records and I see that 55 gr of wano pp gave an average MV of 1095.3 fps for a 10 shot string.The ES was 32 fps and accuracy was 1.795", conditions were mod to strong variable wind wind, mainly 12 o'clock.
