Stevens 32-35 load data

Does anyone have any suggestions for a safe smokeless powder load for a Stevens tip-up rifle in excellent condition? I'm probably going to use cast bullets in the 165 grain range.

I shot 32/35 on a .308 Douglas barrel, for 10 years, in matches.

My first accurate load was 12.0 gr 4227, later 11.5 gr of #9, exceeded that load. Another good load, was 10.5 gr Win 296. All with 184 gr, breech seated loads and F150 primers.

All the above run in the ~1450 fps range so, they are not high pressure and showed no pressure signs, with at least 500 shots on many different cases.

Your bore will be a little larger, giving less pressure, your bullet lighter, doing the same thing. Use that data as maximum loads, with fixed ammo.

Start 2 gr lower and work up.

OK, I'll be first (the first liar doesn't stand a chance - old West Texas adage).

1.  don't recommend, 152.5 gr Ideal 311466 about 1:20 lead:wheel weight alloy as cast.  10.0 +or -  0.3 gr 2400, BACO modified 38-55 brass.  Poor group, some keyholed.  Poor choice.  no undue pressure signs.

2.  Original Ideal #4 tool 2 years later, 168.5 gr as sized with the tool and alox liquid, 10.0 gr 4227, kapok filler, appears accurate, mild crack on firing.  It pays to stalk ebay, hide and pounce, if you have patience.

3117 is supposed to be the 32-35 153 grain Stevens mold, good luck finding one.

Both with a Maynard M1882 in good condition.  experiment over.  I have a tip-up in 25-20SS and have seen one in 32-40 for what that's worth.  Haven't got around to shooting the 25-20SS yet.

The second load may give you a starting load or slightly less to be safe.  Slug old barrels first.  Have fun.

James

Nice mild load for short range work is 5.0g Trailboss behind a 165g 25:1 alloy boolit.  Shot at least 500 times in my 1882 Maynard, no signs of pressure.

Glad to see this info posted since I still haven't shot my 1882 Maynard in .32-35 yet.  Still need to do front sight repairs before it's shootable.  (Too many projects and not enough time and energy to get to them all!)

The ammo that came supplied with my rifle were all paper patched "slicks" and I might try to duplicate those loadings, although I'm sure that I'll try shooting some "greasers" as well.  My rifle came with the ammo in a very novel wooden "barrel" style ammo carrier.

I may have passed my "Best Before" date, but I haven't quite reached my "Expiry" date yet ...
