AYDT 8.15 x 46R Reloading

I bought an AYDT 8.15 x 46R schuetzen rifle. I've got dies, cases and stop ring bullets.I've read many posts on removing the decapping rod on the FL resizing die when resizing 30-30 cases. Looking for info on what to use to decap and recap primers.

I use a Ideal, tong tool to do my de-capping, around the house but, I have a tool hat I made, attached to my powder measure stand, that I use at the range.

You can also de-cap by using a smaller expander button on the de-cap rod, such as a 7mm or 270.

12 gr of 4227, is my most accurate load, breech seated or SR. Start there and go up to 14gr, if you wish.

I use a Lee universal decapping die.
Seat primers with a regular press.

If you are resizing or forming 30-30 to 8.15x46r leave the decaping rod in to expand the neck of the case to .32 cal, lube the inside of the neck with Imperial sizeing wax on a Q-tip just a little will do, put a little on the outside of the case with your fingers, again just a little will do.  I used WW brass and didn't have to aneal the cases.  Before you trim your brass, either make a chamber cast or breachseat a bullet and fire it to see what a fired case forms to.

Since you have stop ring bullets there is no reason to resize your brass at all. Just for an alternative powder you might try 10 to 14 grains of 2400. It worked well in all 5 of the 8.15s I've had.

if you de-cap in a 32/40 die, w/o the 32 cal expander, trim until it will just fully chamber and fire form, you should get it done all at the same time. The 32 expander may keep it from chambering if the bore is less than .320. Many are under that dimension (.313 - .318), mine is .316.

What I actually do, is fire form, as above, Then trim the case, until I have the ID of the case at either groove diameter (for BSing) or trim until the ID is the diameter of the rear bands of the SR bullet for a as fired push in fit.

Frank,
Mine is an old AYDT  three digit serial no. Relined with a 1-11 twist liner in 1931 if I'm reading the proof marks correctly, .317 groove diameter. 300 bore diameter.  If i leave the brass full length it will crimp down on the bullet tight,  formed brass 2.030 long trimmed back to 1.970 works for a slip fit for the .317 bullet, if trimmed to the COTW length of 1.820 the bullet will fall into the case, I'm not using a stopring bullet.

I use a Pope style re-decapping tool, but also a Meacham version. But Franford Arsenal sells a handy tool also that works well and catches the spent primers. Cheap too, but it wont prime cases.

I just got one of the Frankford Arsenal depriming tools a short while ago and I find it handy for decapping a large volume of brass while relaxing and watching TV.  A friend has the same tool (he's the one that recommended that I get one too) modified the spent primer catcher so that it will hold more dead primers and it doesn't leak them back out of the face of the tool like the original version did if it was tipped the wrong way.
