Formimg 40-65

I want to size Remington 45-70 to 40-65. My Redding FL die leaves the neck 0.413" which is way smaller than what I need. Fired brass from my chamber is 0.433 and my Lyman neck sizer goes 0.429 so that combination works for brass already formed. I know I can buy Starline but it is too short. Do all the major brands FL dies go that small or is there one that is closer to my neck sizer? I've thought about honing it out but I doubt I would have a useable die after taking out 0.015". Forster does not offer 40-65 and they won't hone other brands of dies.

I went and checked my brass, its remington and has been fired and run through my CH-4D dies, the necks measure an average of .419". There is no flare on them so my feelings were that they were deprimed in the full length die and then tumbled.

Redding  full legth sizers always  size way undersize, I have 2 sets that I  traded for and I junk drawered the full lenghth size dies. Do yourself a favor and buy a different full lenght sizer die.

Redding makes a form die that works the brass correctly as well as, I think, RCBS.

They may not want to take on such a small job, but any decent machine shop could open up the neck part of a die. Heck, there's someone in the Assra Journal ad. section that might be approachable for this type of job. I could imagine this being a more cost effective route to get what you want instead of a full custom die or taking a random chance on a different brand. If it were my preference, I'd probably want it to still over size a bit and use a decent expander to arrive at the intended bullet tension. Good luck with it.

My RCBS 40-65 FL die sizes neck down to 0.423-.425" or so.

My Rebuilt HiWall has a tight match chamber.Once I fire my brass the neck diameters are +- 0.430". I do not resize my
brass each time. Just run a 0.410 expanding plug in to make sure necks are round.
I have to use no greater than 0.409" dia bullets.

I do something pretty similar to what Beltfed describes using RCBS dies.

I have several sets of 40-65 dies and I have measured the necks of the FL dies.

The RCBS Cowboy and modern Lyman dies from the 2000's s measure .422.
Redding FL dies and original RCBS dies from the 1960s measure .416 and are only a good fit for the original rifles with the smaller bullet diameters.

RCBS trim dies usually measure .010 larger than RCBS FL dies so you might check a 40-65 trim die if you can find one. I have never seen one but I do have a 40-60 trim die and it measures .433 so I use it for a neck die when needed.

Not very professional, but I use the carbide sizing die from  my 41 mag set to neck size all my .40 caliber. A machined piece of 7/8-14 all thread and a Lee quick couple gives length adjustments so a stop can be set.
