.40-70 small primers?

I scored some old UMC cases in the FS section awhile back, and discovered they were for a .40-63/70 Ballard when they arrived. Yesterday I was loading ammo for our annual long range shoot and dug them out to add to my .40-70 Ballard cases to load. I got to the primer seating step and my recapper wouldn't seat the primers! I took a closer look and realized they are small rifle primer pockets, and not large!
These are the first old original UMC cases I've seen, and wonder if it was common for this caliber to be small primer pockets, or if it was just a UMC thing to use small primers?

Pretty common to find small primers on old cases.  A quick romp through my old cartridge drawers reveal small primers in 44WCF, 50-70, 45-70, 45 Schofield and Colt, 38-50 Remington, as well as 40-70 Ballard.

Thanks!
Wish I could find more of these, regardless of primer size! It's nice to have .40-63/70 Ballard brass that's a perfect fit vs. the "make do" brass I have had to work with.
