What 40 caliber bullet for a 40 twist

Just received an original HiWall that is in 40-65 but originally is marked 40-60.  I measured the twist and got a 1:40.  The barrel slugged 0.4058.  I looked in Cartridges of the World and saw that the 40-60 used a 210 grain bullet.  Will a Lyman 403169 240 grain bullet stabilize?  The bore is not too bad of shape.  Not sure if I should use a .406 bullet or I can get them in 0.408 as well.  I have a newer Douglas  40/65 barrel with a .410 bore that I am thinking of putting on as I know I can shoot heavier bullets and want to hunt mule deer with this rifle using blackpowder this fall.  Thanks.  Tom

You really need to slug the bore before choosing the bullet diameter. But the 240 gr. weight should be fine.

I slugged the bore and measured best I could was 0.4058.  Did not try to measure the groove.  Tom

Sounds like a .406"-.408" bullet should be fine.
