Important Schuetzen-Era Medals at Auction

The 06/12-13/2019 Morphy-Julia Militaria and Related auction has a nice bunch of schuetzen-era medals on offer, including one tangentially associated with Creedmoor.  The lot numbers are 2199, 2200, 2202, 2211-2214, and 2216.  As always, I have no stake in this stuff.

Bill and others. I went to the Morphy site and found the Medals. Many are real Gold, and they have weighed them and found a value on just the Gold.
They are price appraised appropriately. So unless you are in the business there is no bargain there. The higher the Carat number the higher the value
based on the pure salvage for Melting them down. Gold yesterday was at
$1,333/ounce. So as much as I would like to aquire a Creedmore era medal I
will have to forgo the pleasure. FITZ. OLD TUCK Cry

Unfortunately, nowadays when it comes to items containing real gold, silver, etc., most auctioneers set ranges and most bidders set their maximums based on "melt" value.  However, while most auctioneers will try to start the bids at 1/2 of their minimum, if the auction is absolute, they have to take what they can get.  In short, nothing ventured, nothing gained.

I was at Morphys today doing some work and to bid on some other items, so I looked at all the medals and decided to buy a couple. None of the lots reached the lower estimate and overall there was little action on them. Very little in fact....

Guten Tag, JägerWilhelm.

Are you saying that the some/most/all of the medals didn't sell?

Bill, they all sold but none reached the minimum estimate. The estimates are not reserves. Bidding starts at 50% of the minimum estimate, like most auctions. As you mentioned above. Some sold at half of the minimum estimate, which meant only one person bid on them.

That is why I am not sure why many are worried about the estimate range.

JagerWilhelm, I think it's a good thing that you (and the rest of the buyers) saved the history represented by those medals. Much jewelery of the past is being smelted- coin stores make tons buying that stuff for spot prices. Most doesen't make much difference, but some- such as these should be retained. You did it and for that you get a big attaboy.  Smiley Smiley And, thanks.

I think he said he was there to watch them sell, not that he bought them?
