I had a similar situation with a single shot I bought to try out the 38-55 with BP. Seating a .383" diameter bullet caused the brass to expand so that the cartridges wouldn't fully chamber. I had to run the loaded cartridges into the resizing die just enough to make them fit. I sold that gun and got a hi-wall with .376" groove diameter.

Bluesman,

I see at least two problems,

First you live in the Kalifornia, "Paradise" no less
and 
Second, that rifle is so ugly I wouldn't admit to owning it.

So given that pretty soon Kalifornia is going to deport "Legal" gun owners or their guns to make room for 'illegal's' on Welfare, you really should consider letting me help you out by sending that poor red headed step child to me for safe keeping here in St Augustine.   

I promise I won't let anyone make fun of it...
In return I will determine the best possible diet for it and record how much BP and Pb it requires to shoot straight.

I will be happy to take pictures from time to time with her at Schuetzenfests and such so you can be sure she it well cared for and socially adjusted.
I even have a well padded open space in a large safe reserved for her with a night light and friends with witch she can discuss Rifle History and the finer aspects of the Constitution and the Second Amendment. 

You might like to know that 'The Gun Safe' assisted living support group has WIFI which features every night at 8:00 PM,
two hours of video clips of You Tube featured 'United Spots' parodies of Nancy Pelosi and friends. What a hoot. 

BTW, I have references. A well healed friend from out west with a collection of historical pristine rifles, sends me a specimen from time to time to develop accurate loads. 
When 'she' is fully developed and graduates to straight shooter status I return her with her credentials and copies of her progress complete with targets, load data and crony information, up to and including the prom. 

All kidding aside, that is one beautiful rifle..

Chuckster was pretty sure I'd be able to shoot at distance if I found a mold that throws a well fitted bullet.I sure hope so, although my primary interest is 200 yard Schuetzen and as V all says above, breech seating is the way to go in that game.

The Hepburn I lost in the fire was also 38-55, that's next on my list to find once I recover from bringing this Ballard home.

I knew I could count on you guys! Such generosity will not go unrewarded...Yes, I am really of two minds about returning to Kalifornia, especially since I hear that gas is going up again there.

Not only will I face deportation, but I won't be able to afford to shoot my toy. Sigh. Even worse, I just found a Hepburn in 45/100 so I'm gonna be broke all the time trying to feed that thing.You just can't win.

In all seriousness I did find a Saeco mold that drops a tapered bullet of 258 grains that shot quite well breech seated over 16 grs. of 4227 in my Ballard. Further range time next week to refine the load if these pesky thunderstorms would just quit.

To answer your question;
1,    Have an understanding first lady who does not mind me spending time at the bench
2,    Having wealthy friends who enjoy collecting antiques and seeing them shoot to the best of their ability.
3,    Having a interest in esoteric chamberings.
