Mine is 12118 and has been rebarrelled. It was probably made the same day as yours John.

A worthwhile objective, but difficult because, unlike the 44, which went through several datable design changes, there's little to distinguish early from late 44-1/2 models except the ser. no.

Only change in markings I know of was the "Trademark-Stevens" marking applied to barrels, first shown in catalog #54, pub. 1914.

In the end, all you'll have is a list of who owns which serial number. And maybe the highest and lowest numbers made if everybody contributes.
You could guess at approximately how many were made based on totals, and years of production. But it would be a very inaccurate guesstimate without knowing what years had higher production vs. lower.

Your beautiful Semi-Military #404 can be dated more closely than almost any other Stevens model, because it was built only between 1913 & 1916; not listed in catalog 53 (1912), only the last pre-war cat., #54.

1859  .25-20, now .22 Hornet
3810  .32-40
3332  .28-30 not the original barrel
4602  .25-21

None are glamorous enough to warrant posting photos.   Embarrassed

Redsetter, in the Savage & Stevens Arms book, it reads: In the No 53 catalog of 1911, an attractive rifle described as the "Semi Military Model 404 appears, etc. etc... not 1913 to 1916
And this rifle was on a 44 action not a 44 1/2, because it was chambered for a 22LR only

Either a typo or careless research--#53 speaks for itself, & the 404 ain't in it.  (I have 2 original copies.)  It's first listed in #54, & did not (like the 414 model) return to production after the war.

However, it's correct that some were produced on the 44 action, as Grant reports them.  What's fascinating is that the 404 illustration in #54 shows (if you look carefully) a 44 action, but the description of it states 44-1/2!  Which suggests to me that Stevens initially planned to offer it built on the 44 action (perfectly suitable for .22RF, of course), but for some reason switched to the newer action.

But the fact that some 404s were built on 44 actions does not alter the fact that the model itself was only in production 3 yrs or less according to the catalog.

Redsetter - I defer to you and original catalogs.
Stevens information,in my short time frame, thought determining  the 44 1/2 serials was going to be a walk in the park. What I'm coming to realize - the serials are not easy to compile. Digging around on the internet for other 44 1/2 serials and what the forum members posted ... the serials are primarily 4 digits and 5 digit serials are few. So I've only come up with 8 serials with 5 digits, the highest one being 12897.  Lead Pot believes there are no serials higher than 13000, yet on Gun Auctions, they listed one for sale with a serial of 16029. Mistake? Could be. AMOSKEAG listed two 44's for sale and Gail at CPA spotted they were wrong, one being a 44 1/2 that I bought from her
The highest 4 digit serial so far is 9831 and the lowest being 1240 on Cow Auction. If the rifles were numbered sequentially, that puts 8591 rifles that were made and sold...or guessing an average of 660 per year during a period when smokeless powder rifles were the vogue and single shot shooters were in the minority ... which believe is a lot of 44 1/2's

The "Ideal" No. 404 "SEMI-MILITARY" MODEL  Take-Down Weight about 8 lbs.  List Price $27.00   is shown on page (39) of my original STEVENS FIREARMS GENERAL CATALOG NO. 53, and this catalog also contains various pages that have the magenta colored "This Model Discontinued." stampings within the threaded catalog binding.
The No. 404 immediately follows the No. 56 "LADIES' " MODEL which is shown on page (38) of the catalog.

Then I stand corrected--only explanation I can think of is that #53 went through a second edition or printing.  Sharpe also listed 1913 as the first year of 404 production.

I was bored some Saturday and was away from home so I didn't have any books with me....so apologies up front for all the nomenclature in the linked spreadsheet being wrong (and needs to be corrected), but the best I can contribute at the moment.   Have other folders with photos of several of the rifles listed, but can't upload folders to the drop box.

I thought I would dedicate more time to the effort but only manage part of a day....but I have kiddos 10 & 12 who are a lot of fun.... might as well go to someone with more time than me.

Spreadsheet has a few tabs it in.

Like I said only part of a day...(password will quit working after a couple of days)

A lot of info available on the web if someone has time to stay after it.

If you read Grants book page 102 he describes the 404 Semi- Military. It reads, the rifle was made up on the 44 1/2 action with automatic ejectors and 28 inch round barrel. Chambered in 22LR only. I can tell the difference between the 44 and 44 1/2 action. Just look at the profile. I would not buy a rifle with a 44 action. In my opinion they are too weak for smokeless powder. I saw one that Ray Day wrecked with a moderate load of smokeless and it was factory engraved. It was a 32-40. I will post a close up picture of my 44 1/2.

I agree John, I refer to that book often. It was given to me in the early 1960s. While the cover is pretty beat up I would never sell it. I used to shoot muzzle loading rifles on the same day the single shot guys met. I fell in love withe the Stevens but of course I couldn't afford one. They were much more expensive than the Winchester Hi Wall, any Remington, even the Hepburn or Ballard either, unless it had a Pope barrel. When you could buy a 1911 in excellent condition for $35 a Stevens 44 1/2 cost several hundred. I did get to trade for a model 45 but the barrel was pretty poor. I had a friend named Ed Mason who had a very large Stevens collection. When he became terminally ill he began to dispose of his Stevens rifles and pistols. I was able to buy the 404 at that time. I don't know why Joe Gorgian bought most of the guns I don't know why he passed on this one. I spelled Joe's name wrong but you get the idea. He does a large business in single shot rifles.

How quickly we forget these days, even when we had such a long and fairly enlightening discussion about Stevens catalog numbers and dates only last fall.  Be that as it may, the No. 53 is indeed one of the catalogs that had its number repeated, as back then we firmly established that there were at least 1911 and 1912 versions.

This was on Gunbroker recently. Stevens arms roll marks on receiver. Serial #12509

(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

Shouldn't that put it in the New England Westinghouse or Savage days after production supposedly stopped ?

Mine is #11921 - rebarreled.
I made a note from something I read somewhere - don't know where - that 441/2 numbers ran from 500 to 12940.  Wish I'd have noted where I got that from.................

The barrel rollstamp is pre-Savage, though.

You are right but it has been about 25 years since I met him so I had guess about his name, after all both names do start with a "J". So I was close.

#2186 Model 45 .32 Ideal, Stevens globe front sight, Stevens vernier tang sight with combination eyecup. Breaach loading tool of unknown manufactur.
I also have a Model 404 Serial # 12190 in .22 Long Rifle that i believe is a 44 action. I would have to find it to confirm that for sure. Relined barrel. I bought it from Gorgen.
Hope this is helpful.
Found another one. Barrel only. #759 or 750 stamping is not real clear  .44-40 #2 heavy barrel 26" . Bought it on Gunbroker and currently on what was my .38-55.

Frank, thanks for the question, I was beginning to wonder myself. The rifle is a custom made on a 44 1/2 action, I got it from Gary Quinlin a number of years ago from an estate sale. It is a heavy barrel 17 Achley Hornet, single set trigger with a four finger lever.no Stevens roll marks on the receiver. I will try and take some pictures tomorrow and see if I can get a friend to post them.

Several have noted that "the street" has long believed that 44-1/2 serial numbers don't go higher than 13,xxx.  Yet here we have one that's roughly 6,000 higher.  Anybody want to speculate where those "missing" rifles are now?  Does it matter that the lower tang is removable?

Is the barrel also numbered 19317?
If not, I've got a possible speculation, but will withhold it pending the answer to that question.

Since the lower tang is serial numbered, would it matter whether it's removable or not? Does the 44 1/2 tang fit into a 44?

I hope this serial#is correct, if so, there’s 6000 Stevens 44 1/2 rifles out there that no one has ever seen. I’ll keep my eyes open, maybe I can find # 19318.     Ledball

On the off chance that it might yield something, I dug this photo of Model 44 DST s/n 18053 out of my archive.  Thinking that if 19317 had a different typeface to the stamp or something that would eliminate the possibility that it's a 44-series tang in a 44 1/2.  No joy.  It could still be.  The only way left would be to check some of the pin diameters in the assembly.  As I recall from working with Gail to get parts for a 44 DST assembly of mine they are different from what was used in the 44 1/2.

Has anyone ever seen a 44 with a single set trigger? I've only seen them with double set triggers, or regular non set trigger.

For the good of the order: I sorted all the serial numbers in numerical order ... (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

Now, let's try to ball park serial numbers within a year of production:
*respective to when they first appeared in different catalog numbers:
* maybe the owner wrote the purchase date on the inside of the stock or forearm
* ie - when 044 1/2's were made in England
* 1911 Known - Catalog #53 - the Semi-Military Model 404
* What year the firing pin re-tractor was introduced
*How many did Stevens produce a year (I read they did $500 a day of guns but that was probably all models
*SWAG!

How many guns was "$500 a day"??? Was that the selling price of the guns made each day? Or the cost of making the guns each day?
Bet they didn't make the same number each day too. This should be funny to see the wild speculation, and guesstimates for daily runs, or even yearly runs!

I do not know the history of this rifle, has a 33-47 Bresien barrel . Was re colored by CPA .Face of action does not have any stampings. It does have the screw for ejector extractor (Paul S. told me all of the later 44 1/2 had this 22 lr or not)

As for 44 double set triggers used in 44 1/2 action I do not think that 44 hammer springs had a tension screw and did not have the extra  trigger spring screws found in the 44 1/2 action .  Should be easy to spot if a    44 1/2 action has a 44 trigger tang .

I have some new info on the rifle I posted a pic of the ser. # 15821. I talked with Gail at CPA and she looked at the history of my rifle . The number 15821 was their work order for that rifle ; it had no serial number on it when they worked on it so they added their work order number to the tang so they had a way to identify the rifle.
She thought 134xx was the highest number Stevens used.

Let me add a little more info on my 10626 rifle:

It came to me as a 22RF, with a Win, Model 52 barrel on it and doesn't have the cross bolt, for the ejector.

It also has this strange 9 marking on the face of the action.

I swapped out the bb and put a Stevens 38/55 barrel on it.

I had the use of a Stevens-Pope "Pope Special Schuetzen" in .22 Short.  It had 44 1/2 action with a SN #14.  Stevens-Pope barrel # was about 1800, so made after Pope's departure.

That implies that they were not done in numerical order.

John,
Not much help here as all of mine were just actions, partials or had Bubba sporterize it.

#1942 centerfire block, pistol grip, double set triggers rebarreled to 219 Zipper.

#8646 receiver minus breech block - std. trigger pistol grip

#10590 complete action, 22rf, single set trigger, straight grip

No other numbers on action faces except 44 1/2

Tale of 2 rifles
Several years ago I aquired an 044 1/2 English model single trigger in 25-20 SS, a short time later I aquired a ladies model 56, 22lr. I wanted to build my wife a Schuetzen rifle. I used lower tang & double set assembly & what ever parts necessary from the 56, had Paul Shuttlworth install a half oct. Douglas barrel and chamber it for 28-30. She still didn’t get interested. The model 56 serial number is 3421 (on the lower tang of the current rifle).

Just realised that my father has s/n 2144 that was rebuilt by CPA back in the 90's. It was originally a model 47 38/55 but is now a 25/20 SS M54. Unfortunately I can not locate the original trigger guard or barrel but do have the original stock and fore end.

Exceptional work by CPA and I will endeavour to post some pictures when I can.

Also have an unfinished project "Lady Model" that was converted to 22. hornet originally but now sports an unfinished un-chambered hexagonal 25 cal. Stock work is a repro based on the 47 stock and fore end from the previously mentioned rifle. Not sure of the serial but will post it as soon I can gain access to the rifle.

S/N 10070 complete single-trigger action with correct loop lever is for sale on GB at the moment for too much $$ (no surprise there).

I am the happy owner of the Stevens 44 1/2 that my Great-Grandfather Wilson, whose family worked for the Peters Cartridge company, purchased brand-new with a 6x J.C. Stevens external adjustment scope.  It is chambered in .22 LR and I have had CPA Rifles make a second barrel for it, chambered in .30-40 Krag, in which I fire only cast boolits.  Serial number is #12083

I have seen several 44 1/2 in the low 500 serial number range and none in the 400s. The highest I have seen is 12934. It is believed that none were made over 13,000.

#11,282 is a 22lr with a 34" barrel-I've never seen another Stevens 22 with a barrel that long.
#9,460 is a DST with a Pope lever and 7 custom fitted barrels.
