Is this serial number correct? I've never heard of a Stevens 44 1/2 with a serial number over 12,XXX.

A factor that would help to ballpark production dates could be: what was Stevens rate of production of the 44 1/2? Did they start off going gangbusters in 1903 and dribbled them out at the end, or vice versa?

Is there anybody still at Stevens who was around back then who we could call and ask?  Roll Eyes Wasn't it Jack who said he swept the floors as a kid and was yelled at by Pope when he bumped the rifling machine with his broom handle?

I think educated guesses for dates are all you could do.  You could ask AI to estimate yearly production, based on lower production during wars, depressions, economy, etc.

I may be wrong, but the problem may be Stevens serial numbers were not only used in the 44 1/4.  They also used the same range in the 44 right?

I've found with other Stevens the best way to guesstimate a date is to look at the catalogs for features changing.  But that's hard with a 44 1/2, and all the high end versions, which may be cataloged, but seldom were bought.

I don't believe the model 44 serial numbers were shared with the 44 1/2.
The serial numbers on the 44 1/2's go to 12,000 plus, the 44's go over 70,000.
