Just realised that my father has s/n 2144 that was rebuilt by CPA back in the 90's. It was originally a model 47 38/55 but is now a 25/20 SS M54. Unfortunately I can not locate the original trigger guard or barrel but do have the original stock and fore end.

Exceptional work by CPA and I will endeavour to post some pictures when I can.

Also have an unfinished project "Lady Model" that was converted to 22. hornet originally but now sports an unfinished un-chambered hexagonal 25 cal. Stock work is a repro based on the 47 stock and fore end from the previously mentioned rifle. Not sure of the serial but will post it as soon I can gain access to the rifle.

S/N 10070 complete single-trigger action with correct loop lever is for sale on GB at the moment for too much $$ (no surprise there).

I am the happy owner of the Stevens 44 1/2 that my Great-Grandfather Wilson, whose family worked for the Peters Cartridge company, purchased brand-new with a 6x J.C. Stevens external adjustment scope.  It is chambered in .22 LR and I have had CPA Rifles make a second barrel for it, chambered in .30-40 Krag, in which I fire only cast boolits.  Serial number is #12083

I have seen several 44 1/2 in the low 500 serial number range and none in the 400s. The highest I have seen is 12934. It is believed that none were made over 13,000.

#11,282 is a 22lr with a 34" barrel-I've never seen another Stevens 22 with a barrel that long.
#9,460 is a DST with a Pope lever and 7 custom fitted barrels.

Back when this thread was active I stayed out of it because I was really new to all of this.  But at the time I had an action a friend had loaned me in order to copy it and build a 44 1/2 from scratch.  The tang serial number is 25933 and is a double set.  I know this isn’t possible and, I assume, pretty much confirms a 44 tang will fit a 44 1/2.

At the same time I had a 44 with double sets from the same friend, that I intended to measure and draw, but did not have the time to really get this done and study both of them.  The 44 tang number is 4680 I believe (hard to read the last two numbers). It almost looks like the two tangs could be interchanged between the two guns.  Per my friend, his father was known for moving parts around.
Some pictures of the 44 1/2 and 44.  The 44 is labeled the rest are the 44 1/2.  The 44 is stamped 50 on the front.

I wish I knew what the serial number of mine was but it came to me rebarreled and the lower tang had been modified for a pistol grip stock losing the number. It had been a 22 RF but the block had been modified for CF. But I still love it and the 4 barrels I have for it now!

Here's info for my 32-40 plain Jane 44 1/2. #2485. Matching barrel stamped on top in two lines:
J Stevens A&T Co
Chicopee Falls Mass USA Pat Apr 17 94.
Under the fore stock next to the serial #, a 2, and on the front of action  44 1/2 and an O.
It shows it's age but still shoots well. Below shot while adjusting sights on bench. Rocky Mt front, rear tang and my own cast, out of an old Winchester mold.

John
