I stumbled across this and found it fascinating.  I would love to see it with the action open, a picture of all the action parts and a drawing like DeHass did.  Anyone know anything about these?

Obviously not a "Ballard Brown" as seller describes, but rather a Brown Mfg. military style Creedmoor rifle.

Actually, I think the seller's excellent photos leave little to the imagination, especially as to the working of the sight.  A great pity the heel sight is missing, but it's an extremely rare gun nonetheless--as the seller very well knows!

There was a thread a couple weeks ago..? a month? that we were discussing this action/rifle, I've slept since then so it's a tiny bit vague.  Roll Eyes  There was a connection between this rifle and Milton Farrow and how this was one of the rifles used in the Creedmoor Matches?  Weren't there some more pictures posted then? Huh

Yes, there was that discussion, most of which I've also forgotten. The Brown's brief moment of fame occurred at the 1883 International Military Match held at Wimbleton, England.  Seven members of the US team shot Browns, five, Remingtons, but the US team lost to the Brits.  One of the team members alleged that Brown had bribed the shooters using his rifle. In a '69 Gun Digest article about Farrow, he's described as a "friend" of Brown, who incorporated some of Brown's ideas into his own design.

I believe the seller is only making reference to Brown's association with Ballard, as in his description states that it was built by Brown who at one time owned Ballard. It is a little misleading, but brought some attention.

If I had been listing the rifle, I would have done it the same way.  When you are selling something online the first thing you have to do is make sure your potential customer can FIND you!
I don't think there is anything misleading about it at all.
From a personal view, I was only interested in the design of the action and would like to know more about that.

Seller is in your home state--how far away?  No reason to think he wouldn't allow you to examine the gun, esp. because he may have it on his hands some time at that price.

300 miles due North.  I know him from 40 years ago(long story).
As a matter of fact, I was in town last weekend before I saw this.
Sometimes it's a VERY small world.

Just a note here. Brown never owned Ballard. Like all the other makers of Ballard rifles (including Marlin) Brown simply built the rifles for Schoverling, Daley, & Gales. SD & G owned the Ballard design, and simply had companies build them for them to sell. As each went bankrupt, the contract was passed on to the next company until Marlin ended up with it.
The only small exception being Marlin who was given a small share of the ownership in his contract. I believe he got something like 5% ownership, plus royalties for each Ballard made. And of course Marlin was the only successful maker of Ballard rifles.

You are correct marlinguy, I was only making reference to the sellers remarks. This is where John Dutchers book really shines, not just to describe a particular model, but an in depth history of all things Ballard.

The rifle I see when I click on the web page looks like a Sharps Borchardt.

WOW! what a neat Rifle. I agree at first glance it makes you think Borchardt.
But further examination shows it does not by any means be any kind of Borchardt. has a Hammer, and what looks like a improved Trigger. And I suspect a much easier disassembly. I like and own a number of Borchardts and they are a real pain when disassembly is the issue. Was wondering about the starting price until I saw it and reconsidered. FITZ, OLD TUCK Smiley

Tuck, for the life of me I cannot see a hammer in any of those pictures. I agree it is certainly not a Barchardt. I have owned one. It was made for the South Carolina National Guard. It was in excellent condition and like all good guns that passed my way, I sold it. I shutter to think what it would bring today. I think the Barchardt was the best designed single shot of all. I am glad to hear that you have several. Wish I did. I have a dozen single shot rifle but nary a Borchardt in the bunch.

As for the hammer, Long Range, see photo 10.  And since the hammer hasn't a spur, there's a safety built into the trigger.
