This one just arrived today. Every Maynard collector strives to get a #14, one of the toughest to find and acquire. I finally got one and it was delivered today. It's an 1873 in caliber 44-100, perfect bore.

Don't have a thing for Maynard's, but that is nice.
You can almost see it at the Creedmoor type matches.

Lordy, that's not just a beautiful gun by its lines alone, the condition is drop-dead impressive!

Two questions.  The tang-mounted "post" for the tang sight appears unusable for the sight mounted, so why is it there?  Also, it looks like there's a base inlet into the heel of the stock to which I assume you could transfer the tang sight.  Am I right in remembering that not all Maynard Creedmoors had that heel base?

The front sight is a Remington but I'm not sure about the tang sight. It certainly is not a Maynard sight. The proper screw holes for the Maynard sight are there under the tang sight. No new holes were drilled for this sight. The rear screw goes into the hole for the original tang sight spring which was mounted under the tang. 

Yes, it has the mounting on the butt for a sight but this sight will not fit there. Not all #14's were fitted with this sight attachment. The post on the tang was original to the rifle I guess. I would not even work with the original Maynard long range sight, only the mid range sight. The screw hole for the thumb piece is under the tang sight also.

I saw that one at Little John's and knew it was a rare bird. Glad you got it.

No Tom, I doubt I'll have it ready to shoot by then and I generally don't come down there that time of year. There is too much shooting around here then. I got 16 cartridges made up and the sight insert retainer on order. That tang sight doesn't look to shooter friendly. I think I'll make a base for my Hoke long range sight to put on it. I would like to go head to head with them sometime.

I was in a local gun shop last Wed. as a gentleman came in with a Maynard he wanted to consign to them. He had a bunch of history for his father who had owned the Maynard, and was a Chinese Flying Tiger pilot during WWII. Supposedly his father found the gun in Burma and bought it from the owner.
Not sure on Maynard calibers, but looked like a very large bore, and guessing it was a .50 caliber? But the condition was amazing! It looked like a brand new gun inside, outside, and wood too! Had all the stock cartouches, and they too were perfect! Never seen a Maynard so perfect in all my life! I think they were talking around high $4k numbers for it?
