Just picked this up today.  25-20SS very light wt. barrel . Repo tang sight . Does the pistol grip area of the Butt stock looks like an original stock ? Just looks a little different from pics. of others I see here.

I think it is a #16 ; barrel has a small 16 stamped on the bottom.

The "16" likely indicates the barrel twist ... 1 turn in 16 inches ... especially if it is stamped crossways to the chamber.

Nice looking rifle.  Still waiting for the one to arrive that I just bought in an online auction a little while ago.  Also a .25-20 Single Shot.  I was shooting my 1873 model .40-70 thick rim up at our local range today.  There was a grandfather, son, and grandson up there shooting a few tables down.  I walked over and asked if the young grandson (12 ish?) would like to try shooting my Maynard.  Of course he said yes and I let him fire about 5 rounds.  I asked "How did you like shooting an old single shot rifle that is about 140 years old?"  He threw his arms open wide, gave me a great big hug, and said "THANK YOU!"  LOL ... made my day ...

I may have passed my "Best Before" date, but I haven't quite reached my "Expiry" date yet ...

Always nice to get a youngster interested in our old stuff .
Do you know of anyone making replacement barrels for Maynard's ?   My rifle came with an extra 32-35 barrel but is not in great shape and would like to use it in matches with a heavyer barrel.

Regarding the question about the original look of the stock at the pistol grip, you are probably referring to the "roll of fat" usually seen behind the checkering which is not present here. I have a "right as rain" #16 in .32-35 which is identical to yours. In fact the wood grain and color is nearly identical as well. You have a good one, enjoy it. You want a competitive barrel, talk to John Bly, absolutely! Also would be interested to see better shots of your tang sight.

The stock looks 100% factory. It has a lot of drop at the butt and a higher comb than most but it looks right. One thing I've learned over the years is to never be surprised at and odd feature found on a Maynard.

The 16 you referred to is the twist of the rifling if stamped sideways right behind the front lug.

In his book, Major Ned H. Roberts and The Schuetzen Rifle, Gerald Kelver pictures a similar-stocked #16 on the plate between p. 52 and p. 53.
