So, what is up with some of these lots of Swiss? Fluffy powder that throws flyers?
Have any of you had trouble?

I used to be able to get 80 gr of 1f Swiss and a 1/16” cork wad into a resized .45-70 case.  The same weight of my latest lot of 1f overflows even a fired case; no space whatsoever for a wad.

I haven’t done so well in Silhouette since starting on this new lot, but it may be that my shooting is in a slump.  Did badly at the Boulder Gong Shoot but pretty well at the abbreviated Quigley Shoot with this lot of powder last year. So I don’t know whether the “flyers” are the powder or me.

I guess I’ll try the new lot off the bench in reduced charges at the former volume so the stuff isn’t compressed to the extent it is when I cram the old load of 80 gr in the case.

Have you tried adjusting the load for the new stuff?  My grease groove loads use Olde Eynsford; it’s only my paper patch loads in .45-70 that need the Swiss.

I guess you could try finer grades of Swiss, ie, 1.5, 2f. 3f . I remember reading somewhere that Goex likes a bit of compression but Swiss  not so much.

My new case of Old E is way off what it has been. 2.5 grains lighter on 38, 3 grains on 40 and 4.5 on 45/90. I been trying it in a couple of rifles in 45/90 and not finding the accuracy  that I'm  used to.

HiWall - sounds like Goex fiddled with the grain ratios for their grades of powder.  The 1st lot of Olde E' was juiced up.  Swiss ratios are Industry Standard - Ole E' are not ...
Swiss 1.5 (250.205)
12 mesh – 0.27% retained
14 mesh – 5.24% retained
20 mesh - 92.59% retained
30 mesh - 0.10% retained
Through - 0.72%

Olde E' 1.5Fg:
20 mesh - 98.163% Hold
30 mesh - 0.612% Hold
40 mesh - 0.000%
50 mesh - 1.224% Hold
60 mesh - Trace
80 mesh - Trace Passed

Swiss FFg (250.504)
20 mesh - 76.16% retained
30 mesh - 23.50% retained
Through - 0.34%

Olde E FFg:
20 mesh - 62.81% Hold
30 mesh - 32.32% Hold
40 mesh - 04.27% Hold

50 mesh - 00.60% Hold
60 mesh - Trace

Swiss FFFg (270.409
20 mesh - Trace
30 mesh - 87.2% Hold
40 mesh - 12.8% Hold
50 mesh - Trace

Olde E FFFg:
10 mesh - Zero
20 mesh - 8.07% Hold
30 mesh - 44.72% Hold
40 mesh - 32.29% Hold
50 mesh - 13.66% Hold
60 mesh - 1.24% Hold

80 mesh - Trace passed

Interesting that you say that John Boy.  My best shooting lot of OE 1.5 was the first case I bought.   The most recent case, and most likely the last I'll ever buy, is very different.

I haven't found a good shooting load with it at all in any grease groove bullet load.  It does shoot ok in one of my paper patch loads.  It also meters inconsistenty in my MVA measure.  Velocity is significantly lower too.

To the original poster... My most recent lot of Swiss is definitely a little less dense, but it still shoots quite well.   I used to be able to fit 82-83gr of Swiss 1.5 in my .45-70 cases, with the new lot it's more like 80gr.

Chris.

I have also seen that newer lots of Swiss are less dense. I still though weigh out the same weight charges. Fills up the case a bit more and perhaps I am also getting more compression but I haven't noticed an accuracy change. I am using 70 gr of 1.5 Fg that comes up to about 3/16" from the case mouth and i'm compressing by almost 0.3". Maybe with heavily compressed charges this change in density doesn't matter much?
