Original Sharps cartridge display
Mar 14th, 2019 at 9:21am
Print Post
I received this collection of original Sharps cartridges from my friends estate.   Way beyond cool but in a 70's Formica box that was falling apart.   Another post was looking for a ammo box and mentioned the guy made other products.   That's how I found hampelswoodandproducts.com .Gerrod made this beautiful walnut box for me.  I recorded the info on the back side for whoever is the next owner when I'm gone.

I kept it just like Charlie made it with his hand written cartridge labels.

Beautiful display, and especially with Hampel's nice case.
I've only recently become aware of Hampel's products, but have been on a bit of a spending spree with him, as his prices for quality custom display products are very good! His shipping can be a little expensive on single items, but reasonable if you're buying multiples at the same time and it's shared among them.

I'm not sure how they are secured. I assume glue but you don't see any evidence of it.  That 50-70 cartridge appears to be a copper case. The lead is so oxidized it appears white in the photo.
I had the case made so I could transfer the whole board just as Charlie made it.

Great display. The 50-70 may be army issue gilding metal and not brass as the others are. I hope you do not mind but it looks better this way. resized 600x600

Nicely done Scott!  That’s a great display and what a great way to honor Charlie.

Wonderful display!

When did Charlie pass away?
I totally lost touch with him when I moved away from that area.

Tom,
That helps my cell phone photo a lot with color but the dimensions are distorted. The cartridges are shrunk down in length. The red felt background measures 12" wide x 11" high.

Charlie's wife and son didn't have a place for these so I hung them inside of the New Braunfels Schuetzen Verein  club house.

Charlie Hart shot with us in Raton, I recall that his rifle was a very nice Sharps Borchardt with double set triggers that, I think, he made himself. RIP Charlie  Undecided

I did not know that Charlie had passed, what a loss to the Texas Single Shot Rifle Assoc. and all that knew him.
I shot with Charlie back in the '80's at the TSSRA matches.
I still have a target that I shot for the Buffalo Match that Charlie loaned me his original Sharps '74 to shoot the match.  Such a fine man, such a loss.

Looking at the bottom row, 2nd from the right...
is that cartridge the 40-70-2 1/2 instead of the 40-70-2 1/4  ?

You may be right, the 40-70SS is a 2&1/2 inch straight case.  A blown out 30-40 Krag isn't quite long enough, that I have experience with.

Good catch.  Looks like it is the 2 1/2

Was not aware Charlie Hart had passed away. I have not seen him in a couple of years. Very sorry to hear that.
