Can anyone tell me what the "1" may stand for? It appears to be around .40, I am yet to measure it.

It is for the #1 bullet. They made #1 and #2 bullet. If I recall correctly the #1 bullet was lighter. I have seen bullet molds with one of each size in one mold.

A very cool Maynard tool ... I am hugely envious!

I may have passed my "Best Before" date, but I haven't quite reached my "Expiry" date yet ...

That is an interesting bullet luber.  How does it work?  Put a little dab of lube in and it pushes it past the bullet into the groves?  Seems like the lube would be hard to get to flow unless it was extremely soft or heated.

I don't believe I've ever seen one before. If I have it's only been in a photograph of a cased set.

Looking at a reprinted 1890 catalogue it states " TO LUBRICATE THE BULLETS - ... By means of the Lubricating Pump more satisfactory results are obtained by using the lubricator cold."

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

That's a very neat lube tool! Extremely simple design, and probably slower to use than some others. But sure would be easy to add to a small shooting kit!

Do you think it would hold enough lube for a 100 shot match?  Roll Eyes

Is it used by placing the body of the bullet in the little opening of the end opposite the screw?  If I understand it correctly that end plug is drilled from the lube chamber so the lube can squirt through into the groove(s) of the bullet in the ring.

Regardless, this is one of those seldom encountered tools we love to see, but which are often tossed aside by the unknowing because they have no clue what it is.

PS  IIRC, the two bullets from the factory Maynard mould were labeled #1 (the "conical") and #2 (the "cylindrical.")  I haven't looked at my mould for a while, but I believe that is correct.

Great photos, thank you so much for posting!

When I get moved into my new home and get my shop set up again, I would like to try to make a reasonable copy.
