Mold maker?

Since the subject of custom molds came up, I remembered I had a set of molds here in brass that have never been cut. I'm hoping somebody here might point me towards a mold maker who has the ability to cut molds from this type of block that has integral handles?

I'd like to get them cut to use with my .28 Pope barrel.

Thank you for sharing Vall and what an interesting find and if you do a little research on the Internet you can also find the process used for cutting these types of blocks. If it is something that you would like cut yourself I have a copy of the 28 Pope Cherrie that I could let you and you alone use. That is if you feel comfortable doing it after reseaching and fully understanding the entire process.

Thanks for the offer, but I doubt I have the skills or equipment to use them, and not screw things up.

Vall, I would just chuck it up in the drill press and close the handles real slow using a lot of cutting oil  Roll Eyes

"chucking it up in a drill press" is a recipe for a disaster. mold cavities of the quality we all like are cut in a lathe on on a vertical mill by a skilled person.

Tom at Accurate said his molds are cut in a lathe, and even with the handles removed this mold blank can't be cut by him.
I also sent an inquiry to Bernie at Old West and he said he'd have to make a "fixture" to hold the mold to be able to cut a cavity. Not sure yet if he's n board with this project or not. Sent him pictures of the mold to see if he thinks it's worthwhile or not.
This may end up just going back in my parts drawer and forgotten.

Well, the way it is right now, it doesn't cast any bad bullets at all. That's a good thing, isn't it?

Bernie from Old West contacted me and said he might be able to do it. He asked for dimensions on the blocks, so I sent those off, along with the diameter of the bullet I need and weight.

Vall,
I'm glad there's someone out there that likes (will?) to do these.

I cast a couple sets of these out of brass one time- made a fixture to turn them (but don't recall ever completing the job- I'm sure I would remember doing it) and still have core patterns - somewhere... always thought if I was to fire up the foundry again to cast brass butt plates I do some mold bodies too.
Do you remember where you got those?
Good luck and keep us posted on what Bernie does.

That was just a facetious statement  Grin  Anyone who did it should not be allowed near a drill press  Cheesy

BobZ you might be surprised on how many have claimed to have done it with success in the past. Maybe they have it's not for me to say but its also not something on my bucket list that I have been wanting to try.
