Flat Bullet Base

Pope recommended only flat bases for accurate shooting and conventional wisdom has followed suit. i have been acquiring old Lyman bullet molds for awhile and have noticed several "target" cavities from days gone by have beveled bases. Now I am beginning to rethink the flat base. In breech seating is it really necessary? If so I may have to be modifying bases of some of my molds.

Ideal, Winchester and others, used that base, to help in loading a bullet into the mouth of the case, w/o shearing lead, for fixed ammo.

What they did, was use the bevel, on the back side of a driving band, to produce, the beveled base.

In many cases, the beveled base causes leading, by allowing gas cutting the start.

Flatlander for what's it worth I slightly bevel my breech seating plainbase bullets and it's improved accuracy not diminished it as one might think. Leading has never been an issue by my doing so and I have done so for over seventeen years of competitive CBA and Schuetzen  Shooting. It's a pain as I do each one by hand but its worked extremely well for me.

What do you use to make your bevel, John?

I have an old Herters set of cutters that, like the RCBS, etc. ones has inside and outside shapes. But, unlike the others, the Herter one has no post in the middle of the outside cutter. It works perfectly well. I gave up doing it for fixed because, like John said, it's a pain.

Pretty much the same tool but an RCBS with the tit in the middle removed.

Just asking.
How can you slightly bevel "by hand" every bullet with the Outside neck chamfering tool and get the bevel perfectly
symmetrical on each bullet?

So it appears that it will be a try and see. Next warm day I will cast up some 1-16 alloy 32's with bevel  and give it a go and see what happens. Thanks all. If winter would go away I won't have to think up these brain thoughts  to keep busy😂

Beltfed it's a slight bevel and it only takes a couple of turns. Try doing a search on the subject there has been a long conversation on the why's and how comes to beveling the base in the past.

I think that's the best course to take. I've on occasion used gas checked bullets without the gas checks and gotten very good accuracy. So I don't think it's as easy as simply stating one or the other works better. Try them, and see how they work in your guns and then you'll have a better answer.

I have seen this discussed many times over the years, about almost any bullet shape imaginable. My take away and what seems to be the consensus, is that since it seems to help across the board with any bullet shape, it has more to do with truing the steering end of the bullet.

If the base has a clean, crisp corner, it will have better airflow.
