Belding & Mull Powder Measure
Feb 9th, 2019 at 4:38pm
Print Post
Yesterday I went to the Nations Gun Show at Dullas Va. and found a Belding & Mull powder Measure. The glass on it was broken but it had two measuring tubes with it. One was the standard tube and the other was a micro measure. I had on hand a piece of plexiglass of the right thickness and about fifteen minutes later it was in place. I cleaned the whole unit up a bit and tried it out using my digital scale. I was really surprised with the results. Using 4227 I was able to throw 14.4 gr. ten times in a row. It looks like a keeper and for $25 I am a happy camper.

Yes, they're a very classy measure; everybody should have at least one. Please replace the Plexiglass with real glass at your earliest convenience. Wink

Congratulations that was a real deal. MVA has a larger measure for sale for their version, that work very well with the Belding and Mull measures.

I have seen replacement glass for them on ebay, at a reasonable price.

I love them, but my only gripe has always been the return spring tension. It's so strong that you have to really clamp that sucker to the bench or you'll twist it off trying to use the handle to drop a charge.
I've always thought I should change the spring out, but I don't load any BP, so rarely use the B&M. I've got two of them. One old original that came in my cased Schoyen Ballard, and another NIB late one from when they went to a clear plastic hopper.

Vall,

The spring and lever for my B&M are in a drawer.  I slide the charging portion back and forth by hand.  Much simpler.  Just make sure you return it to the left when done.  I keep a tray below it less i forget.

There is a lighter spring available at any Ace Hardware, I believe a No. 43, I will check to be sure. It is nearly perfect as it has the ability to return, but a lot less effort to operate.

Have a big box full of springs on my bench, so I'll see if one can be cut to length and replace the monster spring.

For $25 that's a smoking deal! Harrel`s measure is the only one I've ever found that out does a B&M for stick powder - I have 3 (?) of the Belding and Mulls and they get used the most of any of a dozen different measures I have.  If you have and use a lathe and determine a particular load you use, machine a piece of half inch brass to the right size cavity, mark it and it makes things simple.

I dug in my springs drawer and found one that is maybe 1/3 the rate of the original.  The measure still works fine, so I'm wondering what the reason may have been for the monster spring.

Anyone know when B&M might have made this style with the plastic hopper?

I have one with a plastic hopper that is labeled Tuckaho.  I will did it out tomorrow and post a picture.  I think it has plastic instead of glass for the window.

Yes I took the spring out of mine. I like it better that way. Also I was told to take them apart and paste wax all the sliding surfaces. It really makes them smooth operating.

Here is the green measure.  Marked 'Tuckahoe" on the front metal plate.  Plastic hopper and lid.  Slip fit into the body.  Plastic window glued in place..  I use mold prep spray to keep things sliding well.

I have made 4 drop tubes and have one dedicated for each rifle.  They consist of a 1/2" OD brass tube with a 7/16" tube epoxied inside.  Using a log 1/4x20 brass screw with the head cut off, jam a couple of brass nuts together and spin in drill press with a file ( or a lathe) until they slip fit inside.  Epoxy one to the end of the screw and one to the bottom of the tubes, leaving a third to be a locking nut. They fit the Belding & Mull just fine.

Also show is my level indicator cap.  The bottom piece floats on top of the BP column to help indicate the powder level.
