	Two "new to me" Maynard rifles arrived in the mail today and this 2nd one is an 1873 Model #8 two barrel set in an old wooden traveling box. The action was originally nickeled and it came with a Maynard tang sight. The first barrel is 20" with 3 3/4" octagon and the balance round chambered in .35-30 Maynard thick rim. The second barrel is 26" also with a 3 3/4" octagon breech section with the balance round and chambered for .64 calibre smoothbore (aka 20 gauge). The action is serial number 3806 and both barrels are serial numbered to match the action. It came supplied in an old wooden traveling box designed to hold the action, the 2 barrels, and some accessories. Again, the .35-30 has a very good bore although a little hazy in the throat area. I'll give it a good scrubbing with several applications of Hoppes #9 bore solvent and see if it improves too. The .64 SB / 20 gauge barrel has no pitting, but again it's a bit hazy which could scrub up with some cleaning efforts. The set came supplied with some "shooter" brass for the .35-30 formed from shortened .30-30 cases, and one original .64 SB case. It also has a few hand reloading tools and what appear to be some original Maynard conical bullets for the .35-30. One of the hand tools is a bullet seating die for the .35-30 plus there is a wooden wad rammer and a stiff carboard / pressed paper tube that is a slip fit inside the one supplied Maynard .64 calibre SB / 20 gauge case, so I assume that it is for pouring powder into the shell? It also came with two Maynard catalogue reprints which will be good for reference material in future. 	Very well done on both Maynards, thank you for sharing Al. I have had my eyes on two currently on sale here over the pond (as strange as it may seem ) , but the odd caliber and specific brass have put me off (and the price tag as well... ) Your picture might make me reconsider the brass part of the equation...

Don't let the Maynard thick rim cases put you off, there are a couple of options to make "shooter" brass. Depending on chamber length .303 British or .30-40 Krag brass can be fire-formed and used with an adaptor washer either loose or pressed on. If they aren't totally out of your budget I suspect that you would thoroughly enjoy owning and shooting an old Maynard rifle ... This is a fire-forming session with my 1873 Maynard in .40-60 thick rim. 	For the .35-30 Maynard I just bought the previous owner re-worked .30-30 cases to fit the chamber and then used steel washers of the correct thickness either soft soldered or glued onto the inside of the rims to get the correct headspace ...

	Where did you end up finding the rings to use with your .303 brass? I recall you looking for them last summer, but didn't hear where you finally found them?

	No offense, as I've always thought they were classic early single shot rifles. But I could never get over the break barrel design. Just never appealed to me.

	That break barrel design was always a concern for me too, especially bench shooting. However, we did have a fellow many years ago who shot one at Tacoma and did very well with it.

	Thank you for the details on adapting modern brass Al, it does not seem out of my league on my lathe... if I ever get a Maynard that is Is Layman's book on the subject worth investing $15? for the sake of knowledge... As for Civil War Maynard, it's easier to get them in France than the 1873 or 82 models, as vast quantities of Civil War surplus carbines were shipped to the French National Defense Govt after the demise of Napoleon III and our defeat against Prussia.

	A shooter friend shoots a gorgeous Maynard at out weekly 22 indoor Match.With Schuetzen hook, iron sights.He;s built A couple barrels for his also.thanks for sharing. I think he's go nuts seeing the little setup you have.He doesnt do computers.

They are really more just booklets than books, so they aren't all that thick, but again there is lots of good information in both of them to help feed the addiction ...

	I just ordered a 25 round box of 20 gauge Magtech brass hulls to convert to .64 smoothbore cases to get the smoothbore barrel shooting again. Now I need to order some 18 gauge cards and fibres to load them with. The things we do just so we can shoot a round of Skeet with our old guns! LOL ...

	Al, you are an enabler! -that's someone that presents us with things we didn't know we needed... But we don't know how you are personally either though... I've been referred to as a pusher, when you take a newbie to the range, set them down behind a vintage firearm and hand them ammo to burn, that's a pusher. I bet you'd qualify if given the opportunity. Freebird, those of us that encourage you to purchase these items you find - we like to be referred to as your support group. I have several of my support group members at my fingertips (smart phone) and they've done an exceptional job lately! If you ever need help trying to decide a purchase, please feel free to add me to you support group list - I've learned a lot of key phrases and one-liners that really help. Greg ps, George Layman's books on both the Ballard and the Maynard are worth having in your collection. They're not as good as some but there is useful info in them.

	Thanks Greg, my grasp of English is making swift progress with you all This forum sure has been a great support group to my addiction since I started reading through... I got G. Layman's Ballard book. It's compact and informative, so I guess I'll get me the Maynard one also, thanks for the confirmation. I still need to get my hands on a copy of J. Dutcher's Ballard opus... but that sounds like a tough quest... (or an expensive buy...)

	Yes, I've been hoping to walk into one of our local gun shows and "magically" find a copy of Dutcher's book on Ballards on somebody's table, but so far it's been as productive as looking for "Unicorn Poop" ...

	So I just opened today's mail and received the box of 20 gauge Magtech brass hulls in 20 gauge, so now I have to check and see if they fit into the .64 calibre Maynard smoothbore barrel. Slowly getting closer and closer to shooting all of these various Maynards that I've been buying! 	Haven't received the thick rim adaptors yet to fit the 20 gauge Magtech brass cases to the chamber, plus I'm also waiting for some 17 and 18 gauge Circle Fly wads to load in these thin wall brass shotshell cases. I will likely start out with a light charge of smokeless powder over the primer (as a "kicker / cleaner" to help keep the brass and bore cleaner) and then load the balance with black powder under about 3/4 oz of shot. (Probably about 60 grains of BP to start and work up?) I have lots of options for the "kicker" charge including Green Dot, Unique, and Herco, which I think are in the right burning range for the job, but again I'm not trying enhance performance at all I'm just trying to keep things a bit cleaner. If things go well I'll increase the shot charge to 13/16 oz and then 7/8 oz. I'll keep you posted as things progress ... (Also in the process of buying a proper size and weight of bullet mould for the .35-30 barrel.)

	Things are slowly coming together. Received the brass adaptor rings for the .64 smoothbore (will be fitted to 20 gauge Magtech brass hulls), some more for my .40-60 and .40-70 Maynards, and some for the .35-30's. Also received the Ideal #36275 160 grain bullet mould for the .35-30. Just need the 17 and 18 gauge Circle Fly wads for the .64 SB hulls and some time to put all of this stuff to use! (We have family out visiting from Manitoba that are staying with us and they don't leave until the 19th.) Our weather out here has been terrible this year with a couple of dumps of very non-typical Victoria snow which thank goodness has now melted off in town, but we still have a foot or more of snow on the ground up at our local range. I'm hoping by the time our visitors fly back home the conditions will have improved enough to finally get these Maynards up to the range and fire some test loads. 	I keep coming back for another look! The wood that was used in this buttstock is particularly nice. By the way....I've noted that some 1873s have stocks with a comb raised above the upper tang and others have no raised comb like this example. I wonder why, and what was the reasoning behind that....? I don't have a no-comb version to compare drop dimensions between the two.

	Just a guess about the comb height. The straight comb may have been designated when the gun was shipped with a shotgun barrel, so that the user could get their line of sight down on the bead?

	The ones with no comb used left over military carbine stocks. In about May 1875 the stock with the comb was introduced. It was merely the carbine stock shortened about an inch on the front and reshaped. This can be seen easily as the screw holes from when they were carbine stocks are still present.

So a standard "no comb" carbine stock would have a LOP of ~14 7/8" as opposed to the later, shortened "comb" stocks with a LOP of ~13 7/8"? That extra inch would personally serve me better. I pulled off my "comb" stock....and there are the extra holes hidden under the tangs! At some time in the past I recall wondering about those extra holes....but blew it off. Thanks again for solving that mystery.

	When they made the change in the stocks the upper tang was straightened more or less parallel with the lower tang. The difference in the stocks is striking enough that it is hard to believe that's what they did but the extra holes are the tell tale truth. The pistol grip stocks were new made and they are interesting in themselves as the lower tang goes entirely through the pistol grip. This was accomplished by gluing an insert in place that is the width of the tang and shaping it with the stock. Many times this is hard to distinguish as the workmasnship was so good.

	Wet and miserable outside today so I finally fired up the casting pot and tried out this .368" mould for the .35-30 Maynard. Nice mould ... it only took about 5 or 6 bullets to warm up and start casting good looking bullets! (You need to *Login* or *Register* to view media files and links)

Unwilling to leave well enough alone I talked Deadeye Bly into making me rings to convert Brazilian brass 20 ga shells to fit the 64 cal barrel... that project is still waiting for some time on my workbench. Finally I swapped another member here out of a 22 rf barrel that Deadeye (again! ) had built to fit directly on an 1873 with no mods, so now I have a 3 barrel set. "Oh what tangled webs we weave..." 	Let me know if you finally get around to forming the 20 gauge brass Mag Tech cases to fit your .64 smoothbore barrel, I'd be interested to hear how you make out. I bought some of the same adaptor rings and a box of 20 gauge Mag Tech brass hulls for my 2 barrel Maynard (.64 smoothbore and .35-30 Maynard 1873), but unfortunately very poor health lately has put me even further behind schedule on a number of my projects. I found that the Mag Tech brass was too large to chamber in my .64 SB Maynard barrel and will need to be reduced in diameter at the base. The same with the .35-30's ... .30-30 cases are too large in diameter at the base to chamber in my rifle and will also need to be reduced a bit. 	I've used my Maynard shotgun for years. It's part of a two barrel set, the rifle being a 40/40. My load has been 75 gr of FF and an equal volume of shot. I've shot quail, chucker, pheasant, squirrel and even shot back up for two buddies shooting skeet--I was using #6 shot so I had a little more range than they did. The shotgun is so light and easy to swing, the load is great, so that the combo takes no backseat to any modern gun other than being a single shot.
