Maynard 1873 Model #10 .40-70 Maynard 32"

Print Post
Well, the two newest additions to my growing Maynard addiction arrived in today's mail.  First is an 1873 Model #10 in .40-70 Maynard thick rim with a 32" barrel.  It has a 9" octagon breech section with the rest of the barrel round.  Serial number is 7019 and the barrel number appears to be force matched to the receiver.  (Looks to be ground and then the number applied.)  It has a Maynard tang sight plus the open rear sight and a globe front with a very fine "pinball" front sight.  (Unfortunately it appears the that front sight globe was crushed and mangled during transit so it'll have to be tuned up a bit.)  The bore is very good, but a bit hazy in the throat area, but it could just be some leading.  I'll have to give a good scrubbing with several applications of Hoppes #9 bore solvent and see if it improves a bit.

Al,
Nice acquisition! it's sad to see the sight damaged like that, there's a slim chance the ring could be brought back round and re-shaped to fit.  I'll be curious to see how she shoots.

Yes, I have a pretty good gunsmith that might be able to rework that damaged sight back to round again.  I sure hope so.  I already have two other 1873's in .40-60 thick rim so it'll be interesting to shoot this .40-70 thick rim and compare some targets.

Cool

Both Maynard rifles you posted photos of are very, very nice.  I own only one but could see how easy it would be to add several more.  Many competitive shooters and trick shots used Maynard rifles.  I think they are under-appreciated and under-valued.

That is another great looking rifle Al! Hope your gunsmith can apply enough heat to get the combination sight round again!

I'm cautiously optimistic that he can fix it ... I'll let him have a go at it and we'll see what happens.

By the way Val have you ever seen a long base buckhorn sight like this one before?  Can't say that I've ever seen anything quite like it.

No problem, I always enjoy posting photos of new finds as someone usually chimes in with information I didn't have on them.

I agree with you that Maynards are under-appreciated (but I hope they stay under-valued so that I can buy more of them before the prices take off!).  Early last year I didn't own a Maynard yet and then after I bought the very first one it was definitely the "slippery slope".  I now have 6 Maynards and of course I would buy more in a heartbeat!  All of the Maynards I have so far are cartridge guns so I guess I really need to watch for an 1865 percussion rifle or carbine now ...

Can't say that I've ever seen buckhorn sight quite like that Al? It's tough to judge length, but appears to be 4.5" long or so? Most long buckhorns I've seen are around 3.5"-4" long, and usually have a point on the front edge.

I just measured that buckhorn rear sight and it is 4 1/2" overall from the front edge back to the buckhorn.  Longest open rear sight I've ever had on any of my rifles.  You've just got to love the little mysteries related to these old rifles.

That reminds me too ... I still have to pull the buttplates off all of these Maynards and have a look underneath them.  Sometimes I've found little "snippets" of a gun's history under their buttplates.  Old receipts or old hunting licences or notes with previous owners names listed in case the gun was ever stolen and the owner needed to prove ownership to recover it, etc.  Not often do I find such things, but over the years there have been one or two ...

Hope springs eternal! I always look too, and on 2 or 3 occasions it proved very interesting.

I had a Long Range No.1 Rolling Block. When I removed the buttplate, written in ink was:   L Hepburn
Colton, NY and a date in the 1870s which I don't remember.

Never found anything else of interest.
