for those of you that have an original low wall in .22 short, have you seen any difference in brands of ammo? if so, which one do you prefer? thanks.

CCI Target shorts work well in my Stevens short chambered guns.

The CCI target is good, if you can find some still kicking around, nothing beats the ELEY target shorts that were for rapid fire pistol.

I stumbled on to some CCI target shorts as mentioned by Slumlord, shooting them in a Winchester musket really shocked me.  Indoors at 65 ft they did exceptionally well.  I'd picked up 800 rds. of these back when the shortage was on, put them on the shelf thinking I'd try them someday, that someday was last fall. Haven't had time to make it back out to the range with them or that rifle.

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

I buy whatever .22 Shorts I can find locally. Can't be too picky, as the selection is poor unless I order them online. But since I don't compete, and only have two guns that are chambered in Shorts I am not looking to pay for the match ammo prices.
But I've found that most standard velocity name brand .22 Shorts shoot extremely well. I bought some high velocity .22 Shorts from a friend recently, and they were CCI. They don't shoot quite as tight as standard velocity, but still not bad in my Zettler Bros. Ballard.

I found that the CCI CB shorts also shoot very well in a Remington Model 12 Gallery rifle, and I tried way more than a few. This was quite some years ago, so bought more than I needed, but. I'm sure any newer production would shoot as well. I checked, and they are still available.

I've tried nearly everything out there, including most of the Rapid Fire Shorts (Eley, Lapua, Fiocchi, etc.).  CCI Target Shorts are by far the best, 92 % as good as the old Peters Semi-Smokeless of pre-WW1 days.

I've tried them in a Stevens-Pope, a Win 52 with a Pope barrel, three different Winders and a Winchester 74 shooting gallery rifle.  CCI Target Shorts gave the best results in all of them.

Here I thought that was just me... had a couple do that and had a few fall short of the target too, like bowling...

To be clear, there is a considerable difference between CB shorts and CB caps.

spent the day shooting a "new to me" low wall in .22 short. shot Remingtons(bad!) Winchesters(pretty good) CCI's(good) and CCI CB's(real good). I bought this rifle to practice my off hand shooting for silhouette shoots instead of shooting the 40-70 Ballard all the time. the trigger is close to the 40-70 and I still need to add some weight to it but I really like it and the CCI CB's. will put a bunch more rounds through it tomorrow Smiley

With all that low velocity stuff, make sure you see evidence of impact immediately after every shot.  There are some loads (of all makes & not just Shorts) that may not make it all the way out of the barrel, especially with our long-barreled target rifles.
