	I recently purchased some Starline 45-70 cases and find that I can only get 62 grains of FF with a .030 card under my 405 or 500 grain bullets. What cases are available that allows me to get closer to the 70 grain mark,,,i know,,,I know,,I can seat the bullet out farther, that can be kinda messy. I am wanting these cases for hunting where I can get a flatter trajectory and the most velocity....Thanks, Ed

	What length is your drop tube. I found that I legthend my tube 10" and was able to get 1.5 more grains . (36" tube now )

	Classic hunting bullets are lighter. AC Gould recommended the 330 HP for 45-70. CHRIS RGChristensem

	Hornady's 45-70 cases have the most capacity. I get 75 gr. of OE 2f in with a 4 inch extension on the powder funnel. But there shouldn't be any reason why you couldn't get 70 gr of 2f in and use a compression die to compress the powder enough to seat the bullet.

	In the post buffalo era I think the Gould 330 grain HP was the 45-70 hunting bullet ala British Express rifles. My 500-450 No 1 Express used 110 grains of powder and a 270 grain HP.

	Silver, my drop tube is 30 inches, Ill get another though if that works! Chris, oh boy, I need another bullet mold!!! LOL? Ranch, I am compressing 1/8 now, I would be compressing almost 5/16 with 70 grains, Is that even possible without bulging the case?? Oneat, Thanks, Guess I need another mold!!!! Ok,,,, Who makes a mold that has wide grease grooves to carrey enough BP lube? And what does the bullet measure from bottom to crimp? THANKS,,,,Ed

	Longknife, NOE has in stock a suggested light bullet for 45-70: #460-315-RF-PB-AV3 $79 for a 2 cav. Should allow significantly more BP. I do recommend a 0.030 or 0.060" thick LDPE wad over the powder FWIW, for years I shot deer with my '86 Win 45-70 with a 385 gr Lyman 457483, mod to flat nose. over 48 gr 3031 or later 50 gr Varget. 1740fps. Now, in later yrs I got a Marlin guide gun for lighter carry: Loaded with the RCBS 300 gr FNGC over same powder charge as above. Plenty for deer. I would have bought that NOE mold, but happened to pick up the RCBS mold, likenew for much less. beltfed/arnie

Ed, try some measurements: * With 62gr of powder dropped with no compression of the powder column - measure the distance from the top of the powder column to the end of the case mouth. * Then compress the powder column to .150 compression. Measure the distance again. Then measure the distance of the bullet you use from the bullet base to the crimp groove you are using Now determine the distance from the unsettled and compressed. Compare to the distance of the bullet measurement This determines whether you can only charge 62gr or more. You can also gain distance by seating the bullet reload past the crimp groove with the round engraved in the leading bore cuts of the barrel With Starline brass - 535gr bullets - 0.015 compression I can charge the case with 70gr of 1.5FG powder - 72gr of FFg powder PS: I don't use a drop tube - use a vibrator to settle the powder

THANKS,,,,Ed Yes you can compress a lot more than that without bulging the case. Lots of 45-70 moulds carry enough lube for black powder loads. The trick is to use a proven blackpowder lube, such as Bullshops Nasa, SPG, or DGL

	It used to be that Winchester cases had the most capacity. I don't have any Hornady cases so I can't speak for them. Shoot the most accurate load and don't worry about another 25 fps of muzzle velocity or 1" of drop at 100 yards. A 405 bullet with 62 grains of black will handle almost any critter in North America.

	I've never been able to get in 70 grains in a modern case with out heroic measures. OH No another mold! My Seaco mold weighs 500 grains but has less bullet in the case,by 1 grease groove, and more weight up front, than my RCBS 500 grain mould. There fore more powder. Best and cheapest solution is use a duplex load. Put 5 grains of 5744 or 4227 in first. That will boost your velocity, with out undue pressure. But before you go through all of that ask yourself WHY. For hunting a 45-70 is a 100 yard gun period. Anything beyond that you darn well better know the exact range and drop. I've killed lots of things with a 45-70, big things. 60 grains, 70 grains, it don't matter, you shoot through the animal with a 400 plus grain bullet. What else do you want? Past 100 it's going to drop. Know the drop or don't shoot. My 2 cents.
