Whatever happened to reduced capacity cases?
Jan 27th, 2019 at 5:16pm
Print Post
A few years ago reduced capacity cases seemed to be gaining in popularity with cast bullet shooters. I have not heard anything on the subject yet, and am wondering if anyone is still using them and if anyone has them for sale.
Thanks!

Not sure what is going on with them, but RMC will still make reduced capacity cases if anyone wants them.

Hmmmmm.  A bit of work to machine one.

Has anyone tried filling one with (lead or tin) and then drilling two diameter holes (small down to the flash hole and larger for the bullet and powder only as deep as wanted?

The boyz at Tacoma filled .577-.450 Snyder cases to reduce the capacity.  I never had one. They had a special match with them against the Canadians before my time.  The reduced case was very successful whipping the Canadians with their own rifles  Grin

Sorry I don't have any details, I think nearly everyone who was doing it has passed away.

TIM:
I have made some of these -- easy to do.   I took some new 45-70 cases, stuck toothpicks in the flash-holes, put in a little flux and a carefully measured amount of eutectic solder.   Set them on a hotplate until the solder melted,  and drilled out the toothpick.  The result was a solder plug about 3/8" deep in the base of the case.  They turned out not to be useful for the intended purpose, so never pursued it further.
Also made a fellow a couple of cases for 25-06 from solid brass, having internal capacity about like 25-20SS, but he never said how they worked, or asked for any more.

Interesting!  Didn't the pressure in the case cause the solder to get squeezed down and eventually close the hole to the primer?

I might-could try it in the 577-450 using the 14ga shells transformed to the 577-450 - because of the balloon-head cases.  Even if it is just to strengthen the base it could be worth it.

AND linotype is the eutectic solution.

Joe

I never new that they did make them. I contacted them, for a friend about 5 years ago, to ask about reduce capacity cases. They said, at that time that they wouldn't make them.

I guess they are afraid some one will put a full charge in one? To bad, since it seems they need more business.

Don't believe they are lacking for business the site clearly states the reason for wanting to sell is; **Due to Kody’s pursuit of a career in law enforcement we find the need to sell the business.** and it is a family owned business being run by the three and Kody is the Key Player per-say.

Well you Cheatin Charlies Bob.
We followed the rules and used traditional Military Rifles and cartridges - and we thought we could trust our friends.
Turns out only our pet dogs are reliable and trustworthy.

But the Swiss could never figure out why we beat them with the traditional Swiss rifles and ammo.
Of course they never figured out how we post bedded the rifles.
