That surprised me, too, first time I picked one up.  Since all previous scope tubes had been steel, going back to the time when they were constructed from soldered & reamed flat stock, I wonder why in the early '30s, all these brass tube scopes suddenly appeared.

With respect to Wollensak, brass would have been their metal of choice because their main products--spyglasses, binoculars, microscopes, cameras, & especially camera lenses--were all products using brass tubes, barrels, & other fittings.

Frank,  Are all those scopes made with the five lens system we discussed several years ago?
Chuck

Yes, they all have 4 lenses in the ocular cell and one objective lens.

I've boosted one of mine with a 470mm FL objective lens to give it 12X. The FOV is small but, usable. I'm sure the FOV is on par with any long 12X scope, of olden days. The brightness is OK, too.

The brass tube is .032, there is another 6.81 long, .032 wall tube, inside of it, that holds the ocular and erector lenses, plus many brass spacers and a "stop" (disk with small hole). A fairly thick walled X-hair holder and the objective lens holder is also another brass tube that extends back to the parallax adjustment. So, there is lots of stuff, inside the tube.

Frank, Thank you.
Still not sure I have figured out the optics but, obvious, works very well.
Learned a great deal about scopes and optics from discussions with Frank.

Chuck,
Thank you for your kind words.

All I can tell you about this 4 lens ocular system, is that they use 3 lenses and a stop, those first 3 lenses, extend the focus to the 4th lens. That 4th lens, has a 39mm FL. The DCX 39mm FL lens, focuses on the X-hairs and on the other side, the stop.

The other 3 lenses, create the exit pupal and eye relief and focus on the stop. The FL's over lap on the first 3 lenses and their FL's are all 52mm +/- 2mm.

The old Nickel plated finish would be more appropriate and just as distracting.

Do your cells have a sloppy enough fit that they will slip back into the tube body after the plating has been done?    Grin

Good point BP.  Looks like Frank has it covered with his converted scope anyway.

I doubt you'd even notice the nickel finish when your cheek is planted, and you're looking down the tube of the scope. I have an old Lyman scope that the eyepiece is nickeled, and never seen another like it. But when I'm sighting through it I don't even notice the nickel, and can't see the rest of the scope if it were nickeled.

Marlinguy I was thinking in terms of distracting the others sort of like the glare coming of a signal mirror. Someone else I believe was joking about this and I just jumped onto his same theme. All though the part of the old Nickel finish would hold true to being more period correct than what chrome might do.

Even more reason to have it nickeled! Might be just the edge needed to outshoot your adjacent competitors!

"Period correct" on a item that was originally enameled?
