I feel like a kid on a trip asking, "Are we there yet"?
Well the answer is YES! The postman delivered a nice big shipping crate a few minutes ago, and I couldn't get it open fast enough! Al really outdid himself! (Is that really possible?) His colors on the action are as good as it gets, and spot on for a Remington!

I let Al do the polishing on the barrel since it wasn't fitted when I sent it to him. He always does a little extra touch up work anyway, and this barrel is perfection! As is his usual great rust bluing! The work done by Pat at C Sharps to fit and chamber is equally great!

Wood is some of the leftovers from Remington's late 1990's run. This is their high grade custom shop wood.

Barrel is a 34" #3.5 weight Green Mountain .40 caliber. It is chambered in the old .40-50 Sharps Straight.
Still need to mount up the wood I fitted prior to sending it to Al Springer, but I'll get that taken care of this weekend.

Very nice Vall! A classy rifle for sure. Well worth the wait wasn't it?

Yes it started life as a No. 1 military 1867 action. I narrowed and thinned the top tang. Then bought one of the leftover pistol grip lower tangs that Numrich sells from Remington's late 1990's run. Stocks from that same run.

Recognize that front globe JerryH? It's the one you sold me and it's been sitting here waiting for this project to get done. And it was worth the wait, and all the sidetracks along the way!

So, that's what you had planned for the sight. I have the same one on my Rolling Block.

I put a piano wire .045" trigger return spring in it Dale. I bend them up myself from an example ssdave showed me years ago. The pull on this Roller is about 2.5 lbs. and breaks clean.

Thanks Pete! Always wanted a pistol grip Rolling Block sporting rifle, but whenever I've seen one they go much too high. When I heard Numrich had the trigger plates from the late 90's Remington run I quickly ordered one. Considered ordering the single set trigger parts also, but I've never had any trouble getting Rolling Block triggers down to respectable feeling trigger pull.

Beautiful rifle.  I have a similar build in progress as well, 40-65 off of a #5 military action. In the wood fitting stage currently. Treebone stock set. It will be awhile, but pictures to follow.

Outstanding job! Congrats on bringing the old roller back, Mr. Springer worked some wizardry on that old iron for sure. I'm looking forward to the range report. Thanks for the great post, nice to see an old rifle brought back like that.

Vall, it seems to me that in past posts you've claimed to be not that much of a rifle customizer/restorer.  But while Al Springer certainly lent his expertise, the concept, the project directing, the final fitting - that's all you.  Moreover, the praise your reconstituted sporter has earned so far only underscores your abilities.  So, well done indeed, sir, and I wish when it's done, it were mine.

Thanks Bill. My yearning for a pistol gripped deluxe Rolling Block sporting rifle goes back a very long time. I've wanted one since I saw pictures of one decades ago. I've looked at many others in the meantime, but the prices were pretty high on originals, or restorations. I finally decided to build up my own when I found out Numrich had purchased all of Remington's NOS of Rolling Block parts. Being able to buy the correctly shaped pistol grip lower tang was a big deal as I'd seen so many rebent tangs that just didn't look like the originals did.
I'd still love to own an original, but considering how much money I saved building my own with Al's help on the finish, I'll probably still go without on an original.
Getting this completed now will allow me to work with it for months prior to our annual long range shoot in July.
