Stevens 44 production year?

I have a Stevens model 45 in 28-30-120 in the 19xxx serial number range. I understand the records are not available, does anyone have an idea on year of production for a rifle in this range?

The cartridge narrows it down considerably:  introduced in 1900, & probably wouldn't have been chambered after 1903 except in 44-1/2 actions.  Does this one have the lug on the hammer used on larger CFs?

Looks like fancy wood--original?

Redsetter, Thank you for the reply,I am not sure on originality of wood, it does have almost 100% color case on receiver but the address was interrupted with a sight dovetail that has been filled in. The overal condition is very good. I am new to 44s so I am not sure what you are referring to on the hammer, is it visible without disassembly? I’m on the fence about selling the rifle but decided I should learn more before making that decision.

Thanks

A side view of the hammer, at full cock, will tell us.

You should. That lug, which is a small "bump" on the lower face of the hammer, won't make much difference in value, but it's good to know, as most 44s don't have it.  Originality of wood can be determined by looking for matching ser. nos. on the forearm & under the butt plate.

Don't see that lug, mainly used on .32 & .38 calibers to reinforce the breech; but I did hear of one on another .28.

I'm strongly of the opinion that the forearm is a replacement, the schnabel tip being both somewhat too large and not quite correctly shaped.  I'd guess the buttstock is at least refinished and since it matches the forearm so well, may also be a replacement.  In fact, I'd bet that the only visible components that haven't been refinished are the frame and its internals and the tang sight.

Still, it's a very nice looking rifle and the caliber is one with a lot of accuracy potential.  Speaking for myself, I'd shoot the rifle before finally deciding whether to unload it.

Mine does not have the lug. It's one of several I've never gotten around to geting ammo loaded and shooting yet. Have brass, dies, and bullets.

Simply right click your mouse and then click on "open in a new window". It opens the oversized images at correct size. Easy peasy.

Trail runner, the Stevens 45 were produced between 1896 and 1916
