A surplus of Springfields!

Trapdoors that is. A very dear friend passed suddenly and I find myself with his 3 trapdoors to dispose of for his wife. One is an 1868 50-70 dated 1869 with freckled metal, a stock that has been carved on by someone who probably had to lug it around on a cadet campus "A OK", and an absolutely pristine bore. Another is an "1884" rifle (84s are somewhat of an enigma - the serial number falls in 1884, the stock cartouche is 1883, and the sight is a Buffington which rolled out some time in 1885 - the breechblock is marked 1873 which is correct as the ones marked 1884 didn't come along until 1887!). This one is about as good as you could find and I plan to buy it myself. The third is an 1884 carbine, serialed and cartouched 1887. In a retro touch, somewhere in its past the Buffington, loved by marksmen by not so much by the troops - especially those on horses, got replaced by an original 1873 carbine sight. Its stock may have been touched up a bit but the bore is excellent. So, my dilemma is what should I ask for the 50-70 and the carbine? I'd like to offer them to my club members first at a fair price for both the members and my friend's wife. Any thoughts? I'll post a pic of the three amigos tomorrow.

Finally got around to taking a photo, not a good one, but a photo. Also found a bayonet in the 1887 brass frog scabbard but it has had a hard life and doesn't really go with any of the rifles. Talked to some guys at the club and I'm thinking I should offer the 50-70 to them for $550. The carbine is a little harder to peg but I'm thinking it should be more like $1000. Does anyone know if those would be reasonable?

Too cheap. The 68 should be closer to $800 or more. The carbine, if correct except the site 1500 and up. I'd be interested in the 68, and the carbine too at your prices. Let me know if they don't sell to your club members.

Around here the 50-70 with mint bore would easily be 1200.00. The carbine would go between 1200-1500. Keeping the 1884 model for yourself is a great idea, it will make a fun shooter!
