Good point.  I can definitely say that the Saeco #740 and BACO 400409M4 are very good bullets in both 1:14 and 1:16 twist .40-65s as I shoot both bullets in two Shilohs with those twists.

In my 16 twist Browning the most accurate bullet at 200m was the Lyman Schmitzer but past that distance in varying conditions the Snover or Saeco 740 were more accurate and the NASA II monogroove was even more accurate and flatter shooting. I had also tried a longer Pioneer bullet but with little success. In my 18 twist 40-60 Maynard the Saeco 640 was the ticket over any longer/heavier bullet. I guess I should also say that in the Browning bullets cast of 1 to 20 were more accurate than those cast in 1 to 25 or considerably more accurate than in 1 to 30.

I am 72. I should understand some of these great mold makers retiring. I am fortunate to have a few of Jerry Barnett's molds. I have a few Hoch molds. I cannot seem to make contact with him. Sorry I never made contact with Boomer & Jones. A good custom mold is a joy. Casting is therapy.

Another helpful, and timely, thread. I am a new single action shooter (been shooting since the mid-70s though)) having focused (so far) on German Schützen rifles for the past 3 years. I have recently decided to get into long range BP shooting (I live near the Shippensburg, PA range). Anyhow....have admired a nice C-Sharps .40-65 rifle for sale at a local shop. Closed the deal today.

Rifle reworked by John P. King and with a Badger barrel and a Shiloh chamber (not sure how I can verify the latter 2 features).

With the rifle came an index card dated 2005 with the recommended smokeless load. Recommended bullet is a 400 gr Lyman Postell. .408.

So, point being is that I too need to buy a mould. I have looked at some of the moulds mentioned on this thread a few days ago, and now with the rifle I found the load data with the RCBS dies. Have no problem buying the BACO or Lyman Snover. But now I am curious about the Postell bullet. Any suggestions?

BACO also offers a 40 caliber bullet 396 grains with a "creedmoor" nose that is pretty similar to the "postel" and shoots well in the 40-65.

If John king rebarreled it then it will likely shoot very well.  I have some rifles he's rebarreled and they are excellent.

The way to know if it's the same as the Shiloh chamber would be to do a chamber cast.  The standard Shiloh chambers ( in .40 and .45 ) have a 0.050" freebore at 0.001" over groove and a leade angle of 2.5 degrees per side.  There is a 45 degree transition from the case mouth to the start of the freebore.  In my two Shiloh .40-65's, a 0.409" bullet is a nice snug slip fit so the chamber is reasonably tight.

Thanks. I just found a 415 grain Postell mould at BACO;

(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

The rifle came with several bags of bullets. I just sorted them and found ones is a .409 400 grain Postell bullet, so I will load some up and see how they do.

Those BACO moulds are sure are easy to get to casting well.
