Steven 44 I have?

Print Post
Many years ago a gunsmith that I hung around his shop gave me one of his collected Stevens single shots.
He was a collector of them and  probably owned over a 100 of them.
He had them in an Bank Vault that was his shop an old bank building.
Each one of the Boys Rifles he owned had its own hang tag on them and it would tell the history of that particular rifle i.e of year made,  who, when ,where he bought it and any work he done to restore it to its original store bought configuration. As in springs , wood bluing , liners etc.

Mine only had a tag telling the  person he bought it from and he had preformed no work on it.

It is 95% or better, color case is deep on the receiver less so on the buttplate, bluing is perfect as is the walnut stocks.
Looks to have the original sights, looks like a buckhorn rear and a silver looking "pinched" blade in the front dovetailed into the barrel.
I have not fired it for years but I remember it is very accurate, its a 22.

24" barrel end to end,  round and octagon measures .800 at the muzzle. Has 44 under the forearm on the right front of the action and I think a 2  stamped on the left front of the action.

no names  scratched on it anywhere, on the wood under the butt plate is the last 3 numbers of the serial in looks like white grease pencil. Serial # 500XX
Anyway this is my first post on this forum but am a member most anywhere. I learned my gunsmithing skills from this veteran gunsmith that  could make anything , I use that  knowledge the last 40 years to use as my hobby in  gun repair and making. Thought I would post this mostly as a thank you for my friend now long passed and most grateful to the experience and the beautiful  rifle passed down.
Many Thanks
Ron

Sounds like an exceptional rifle that invokes wonderful memories.  Are you able to post pictures of this treasure?

Bill I do not have any pics of it and I only have a flip phone  but will make an attempt to get a few and post them.
I got interested in it again yesterday and got it out and looked for any markings underneathe the wood. thus prompted my membership to this forum.
It stays in the dafe and in one of the gunsocks so I never see it to think about it.
I have been tinkering around wanting to build a bolt action  chambered for a 22 Savage HP but I am not sure yet that I can make it feed  so the idea of using a single shot has been flopping around in my head.
Not that I would use my fine #44 but wanted to "feel" of it again.
If I make a single shot  will probably be like a Ruger #1 or something like that. or a single shot bolt  rifle.?

I've thought a lot about a 219 Zipper barrel for my CPA.

A Krag will feed .219 Zipper, so it ought to do .22 High Power.

Downside is that Krags really ought to be limited to .30-30 pressures, and your .22 HP goes a bit above that.
