Being more a Corona guy, I am thinking I need to head south.

This is probably the smartest thing.  Hot weather and Corona is generally better than freezing weather and scotch Smiley

one has tears in all of the holes.

Flat nose or wad punching bullets leave a wider hole and do not tear the target as much as long nosed pointier or Spitzer nosed bullets.

My Paul Jones Spitzer bullet always punches holes that appear to tear the target as the long tapered nose pushes through after the pointy tip has already punched a narrow point of entry.

Short nosed bullets with a flat metplat punch a hole more similar to one created by a hole punch.

The Spitzers are slightly better in the wind at 200 yards than the flat nosed bullets.

Flat nosed bullets are preferred for hunting since they mushroom better and knock down critters better.

For the Schuetzen game I prefer Spitzer nosed bullets.

For long distance shooting (1,000 yards) round nosed bullets maintain their dynamic stability better after traveling long distances.

However Spitzer bullets have very poor dynamic stability at long distances.

I guess what intrigued me the most was the "slit" in the hole. I've seen almost all shapes of bullet holes in targets. Those just struck me as odd especially since the target material appeared to be of a heavy or thick nature.
Thanks so much for the explanation on bullet type qualities for different distances. Shot pistols for decades. Starting over on rifles.
Take care.
