Ruger #1 with mods ?

Just picked this up from my dealer (Gunbroker buy).
Price was right and I had never handled a Ruger with double set triggers .
I was surprised when I removed forend ,to look for smith markings, that the main spring hanger was cut off and a pc. was attached to the barrel to hold the spring.

Was this done to improve accuracy ?

Any info on this mod. would be appreciated .

There is a thread that just discussed this modification.  It's one way to use a larger barrel than what is possible with the stock hanger system.

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

The normal hanger wont  clear a very large barrel, thus the modification on yours. I think it makes a much nicer setup, and they usually are more accurate. Not sure if it's the relocated hanger, or the large diameter barrel, or both?

Whew! Good thing I didn't see that on Gunbroker! Wink

What caliber? Who did the work?

I can see the larger barrel, but question the work and cost involved in fitting a No. 1 with a DST. A Canjar or Kepplinger single set trigger is a drop in and just as good if not better.

Not sure who did the work , there was not any markings on barrel, the dealer was in eastern NY on Pa. line ..   The rifle was advertised as a 32 Ballard long but the dealer was selling for an estate and did not have any knowledge about the rifle., it looks like it is 8.15x46 or 32-40 . I will do a chamber cast when I have the time.
