the smaller box contains a few tools, glasses, etc and fits in the larger case.

Having got that off my chest, is the "thinggummy" attached to the frame near the triggers for resting the trigger finger on until let-off?

I think it's a finger rest.  Have seen it on other single shots. Medals photo is pending.

I've seen that rifle, but not recently. I believe the finger rest is the rear trigger from a double-barreled shotgun.
