Scope tool?
Nov 18th, 2018 at 4:32pm
Print Post
This little tool came with a Lyman STS I bought a few years ago.  I have no idea what it is or how to use it.  I figure it has something to do with quickly adjusting elevation???  On tab is marked 50 yds and the other 100 yds.

Anybody know what its for?

It's called a Known Ranger. Made to make quick adjustments between ranges. I have one in the original box. If I can figure out how to post pictures, I'll put some up.

The Lyman "Known Ranger" was attached to your Lyman rear mount using the elevation binding screw.
Its purpose was to reduce wear on the elevation adjustment, and to provide "instant, close adjustments for ranges of 50, 100 or 200 yards."
It was introduced by Lyman in 1939 in Catalog No. 26

I do have the instructions. If you'll PM me an email address, I can scan them and send them to you.

The name?  When Lyman introduced this gadget, The Lone Ranger radio series had been for several years one of the hottest shows on the air, & by '38, movie serials were also in production, followed by one of the very earliest TV series.  My family was a long time getting a TV (the nearest TV station was 50 miles away, so a huge antenna was needed to pick up anything), but the radio show was still running into the early '50s, so I remember hearing the  unforgettable introduction to the show:

"Return with us now to those thrilling days of yesteryear, when from out of the past come the thundering hoofbeats of the great horse Silver! The Lone Ranger rides again!"

In reading the description about how this tool works I still don't understand how it saves wear on the adjustment knobs. Wouldn't they still have to be turned?

Only a few clicks at each range to adjust for different bullet drops. It keeps you from cranking ten revolutions of the drum for each range adjustment.

Charles

You would only need 10 revolutions to go from 100yds to 1000yds.
I don't know if they have that much adjustment.

It’s common Smallbore Prone to use some sort of speed device changing distances. 50 to 100 iron sights its a two step front sight block. Scopes same thing with the device pictured.

It’s not to save wear and tear,  advantage is the gun is within a few clicks of zero. Smallbore prone under most match rules only 2 sighters allowed. No room for clicking excessive

If having an understanding of the scope settings and how to read them and then having taken the time to note them it's really about the same with or without the device.

Other scope makers didn't rush to copy this device.  'Nuff said?
