Wind drift being the deciding factor in LR matches, a spitzer is superior to a elliptical nosed bullet if, it stays above the speed of sound.

In BP, LR shooting, the bullet goes subsonic by about 200 yards, depending on initial velocity, at that point, the elliptical bullet (SD being the same) looses less velocity than the spitzer.

Wind drift is a product of velocity lost (yes, I know that there are other factors, most beyond our control). A spitzer looses less velocity at supersonic speed's, because of it's ability to push the shock wave and a round nose, elliptical, looses less at subsonic speed's, because of it's ability hold laminar flow, reducing air  resistance.
