Looking for experience (other people's)

I have a Marlin 336 in 38-55. 26" barrel with Ballard rifling. 1:18 twist. Played around with a bunch before I got the C Sharps (38-55).
Today I was in the reloading shop and I noticed I had some cast 310DT tapered bullet. I am the second owner of the Marlin and the first owner apparently had the Marlin "fix) done ("throated"). I can easily chamber a 250gr seated out as far as she can go and not touch the lands. The barrel slugs at a touch over .379 and I have got the groups down to around 1 .75 + at 100 yards. Normally, 2". A bunch of stuff was done to the Marlin per M McPherson's book.

Mounting the 336 in the rifle clamp, I picked up an as cast bullet, and dropped it into the chamber. Then I took a case that I had rigged before that would place the bullet 1/16" in front of the 2.08" case. Some pressure needed when I got to the .379 band but the lever closed and is not bent Smiley

Pushing the bullet back out, the lands have made skid marks on all but the base driving band. Will this be a problem? I realize I may get some leading and the hot stuff may screw up the base, but I want to try some.

Drop tube style, OE FFG to the top of the case weighs 50.9 grains. .030 Walters wad and I am good to go.

Is there anything to be concerned about with the base band "hanging out back" other than disappointing accuracy...maybe. I have rigged up a blow tube so I can fire ten rounds without wiping. Heaev forbids it works, duplex here I come.

This seems excellent place for advice and info for what works and what does not for breech seating. After all, the question asked pertains to a "specially" throated barrel and how the rifling engraves a bullet. And the rifle happens to have a built-in breech seater.

Not to mention that most schutzen rifles are lever guns.

Ballards may be weaker,

The "Marlin fix" done to most of those guns ruined them. Most shoot piss poor after the monkeys get done screwing with the chambers.

How do you breech seat a 336? Use a plugged case and force the bullet into the bore using the lever? That will result in a bent lever on a 336, and then you'll have two problems.

I certainly understand your point, I was called obnoxious for mentioning modern theory!
But, I for one would be interested in hearing about your results with breach seating your lever gun. Since you are getting the bullet seated without bending the lever why not seat the bullet until the base band is engraved?  Nothing says a bullet must be seated 1/16” only.

I saw the original question was not strictly Single shot,  but it seemed a legit question related to breech seating and a question about safety.

If you have NO pertinent information related to the post,  even if off topic, don't reply .  and the thread will die off.

I believe that there has been a procedure used in the past, regarding posting OT threads.

Correct me, if I'm wrong Moderator's but, you contact a forum Moderator and ask if you can post something OT.

You then state at the beginning of the thread that it's been OKed by a Moderator.

Regarding R C's question, the chamber should be at least 2.12 long. It's not the case that determines the BSing length but, the chamber and throat and DIAMETER of the throat also. So, I'd say that your at least .040 short and the base band of the bullet could be to small and cause leading.

You need to know how large that re-throated throat is and use a base band, .001 larger and no smaller that the throat diameter.
