So far, I’ve gotten two Chickens in BPCR Silhouette matches by skipping the bullets off the ground.

It takes Minnesota Fats skill plus a Euclidian knowledge of geometric angles, not to mention a solid understanding of the effect of the ground impact on bullet shape and remaining velocity.  The geological composition of the ground in front of the target also has to be taken into effect.

Also, the Coriolus Effect.

It’s actually more difficult than mere holding and squeezing and a successful demonstration always rouses the observing crowds to a fever pitch.  The kids want to be just like me when they grow up; the women all want to be with me; the men all want to be me; autographs and product endorsements sought, etc.

I just wish I could do it more consistently.

Yep! It really works! I scored a 100M ram in a Pistol Cartridge Metallic Silhouette match that way last month. Gun is a Ruger Single Six shooting .22WMR Federal 50gr bullet load. Nitro powder.

My most recent contributions to the BP vs Nitro investigation have been shooting 40M chickens and 100M rams in the horizontal feet they stand on. Figure that is as good as a 25 in 200M schutzen. Gun and load same as above.

Still trying to get it all together for shooting 40M chickens and 75M turkeys in their little tails. Provides a very dramatic take down of those targets -- almost like those drama-queen rodents that Westerner shoots. Gun and load same as above.

There was a schuetzen game in which the bullet had to be skipped off a pond to hit the target.

Sounds like a happy confluence of some bored schuetzen shooters and a pond.

This is sounding like a golf thread.
How well do your bullets skip in the sand traps?

No, this was serious shooting. Wish I could find the source which had photos. I did find this description that someone remembered: The actual competition was set at a lake which was down in a ravine or for lack of better terms between two mountains. Shooters on one side, the targets on the other, backed up by the rise of the mountain. The wind was not an issue and the lake usually was mirror smooth. The targets were set so that they mirrored on the face of the lake and the shooters were to aim at the reflection, where as the bullets skipped off the reflection and then into the target. The rifles used were of the Schützen variety, and launched round balls in order to achieve the best "skip" off the water.

I have a small sack of 44-40 round ball loads that I used to shoot in a revolver at CAS. Maybe I should try those at a 100M Metallic Silhouette shoot.

No pound to serve as mirror, probably just have to find right sight setting and aimpoint or put a protractor and angle arm on the barrel and find right barrel angle to get skipping angle that gets good hits.
