Early Christmas!

Went to a gunshow yesterday with my son-in-law looking for something. Not sure what; but, I had some splurge money. We sold my wife’s small commercial building and kept aside a small amount for each of us to have some mad money. Show was extremely disappointing. Son-in-law and I were there less than an hour. Didn’t spend a dime between the two of us except to get in.

Stopped by Cabelas on the way home. Just to kill some time cause the womenfolk were out shopping for throw rugs. Inside their gun library, wedged between some sporting bolt actions was a Shiloh Sharps. Go get an employee with a key.

Rifle appears to be new with one tiny rub spot on the barrel and perfect wood. Can find NO evidence of use. It’s .40-65 Winchester. $1399.00 plus sales tax and back ground check. Clerk said quite a few guys looked at it but they didn’t know what .40-65 was.  Smiley

Sometimes, things just fall in your lap!

Shopping for dies and reloading components now.

Nice find! If you decide it's just too odd of a caliber let me know I'll give you $1500 for it!  Grin Grin

Brass - Starline is available, I have Lyman and Redding dies - both are great, BACO has a good money bullet mold, check the twist 1:16 is my preference...
Black or smokeless?

Going with smokeless powder. We’re selective logging right now and there’s a ton of fuel on the ground. Plus, my house is in the middle of it.

Might try Hawks soft jacketed bullets and the Starline brass. I emailed Shiloh to see if they have the twist rate for my serial number. Then I’ll place an order with Hawks.

A Shiloh at a Pedersoli price! Another screw up for Cabelas that ended well for you! Good looking gun too.
If you cast bullets, I like the RCBS CSA molds of 300 and 350 for my .40-65.

I was wondering what they gave the guy for trade in value; or, how much they purchased it from some widow?  Embarrassed

The twist rate is almost certainly 1:16 as this is their default.

I shoot Shiloh Sharps in .40-65 in both 1:16 and 1:14 twist, but only shoot black powder in mine.

The Saeco #740 bullet cast in 20:1 is an excellent choice to get started and is capable of excellent accuracy.

One thing to keep in mind.  I've heard a number of people complain that the Starline .40-65 brass is a little on the short side.  I've never tried it as I form all of my brass from .45-70 which gives me plenty of length to work with.

If you ever want some good starting points with black powder let me know.

Chris.
