Speaking of gun shows

Is anyone planning to go to the Tulsa Oklahoma gun show that's coming up on Veteran's Day weekend?  I'm planning to go and wouldn't mind visiting with anyone else who might be there.  James?  Rodney?  Tony?

Regards, Joe

Wishing I could make it, got an additional anchor holding me down this year - maybe in the spring...  Sad

Bruce, Dan, Rodney, are you going to make the Sioux Falls show in February?    Anyone else? weather permitting...

I am such a piker. I still have never been to Tulsa, and it's on my bucket list to do. Brother lives south of Norman, Ok., and has asked me to come visit and attend the show many times, but just haven't done it yet.
I really need to just schedule it, and get there before I'm too old to walk past the 3500 tables!

Do it Vall, you will have no regrets!  I chose not to teach a class  spring semester so there are four shows this winter/spring I plan on, making up for the one I'm missing this fall.    Wink

The Tulsa show accommodates those that can't walk past all the tables too in the form of carts and buggies, so no worries.  Cheesy Cheesy

Do they rent them there Greg? That might make the tour very relaxing, and easier on my bum knee.

Vall,
They do rent them, here's the link...?

Rodney, that is one of them on my list.  Vegas, Sioux Falls, Spring Tulsa (April 6,7) and Denver.

It'll be a first for me, I've heard good things about it.  It was a while back a few on this forum were touting it and some of the folks at the Denver show talked favorably.  It's about half the drive and I'll have a little more free time then.

We are here at the show, already met joe and his buddy, Bruce and Dan the big white hunter. He took a Cape Buffalo with his refurbished double. I get to see pics tomorrow at dinner at the white river fish market. I picked up a #1 Remington sporting very late gun in 32 RF. So a good show already.

James, I know you will have good time there but you were missed here. There was a Pratt and Whitney sine bar rifling machine running and making barrels a civil war era one from the Stevens factory, pretty awesome. I joined the German gun collectors they are doing a book on schuetzen rifles for the members. A great show.

That rifling machine was at the CGCA show in May also. But some jackasses complained about the noise, so the owner could only run it for 10 minutes once an hour. Too bad, as it was a very interesting display, and something most of us will rarely get a chance to see running!
I was fascinated by it, and loved watching it run!

That really would have been something to see. But, you know, there's always somebody that'll bellyache at at the very mention of some work. Even if he's not doing it.

It really wasn't very noisy, and I think someone just wasn't having a good show because the people were distracted by wanting to watch the rifling machine run, and not because it was noisy. I know I watched it with great enjoyment for as long as he could run it.

I remember when Val left and someone talked him into coming back behind the scenes and he has
turned out to be a very valued and knowledgable contribution ever since.

I was really taken with that rifling machine and took some video of it with my phone.  If I can download it, I'll try and provide a link.  Nice to visit with Rodney and Tony and also with Al Story and Ralph Ballentine.  I always have a great time at the show!  The white sea bass at White River was delicious!

Joe I could watch it all day long I Love this kind of stuff. By chance did he happen to mention how the barrel blank was deep drilled and then reamed prior to the actual cutting?

Mr.Olson said he works full time for Lewis Machine and Tool and that Karl Lewis kindly supplies him with .308 barrels.  He also mentioned that he displayed the machine for the very first time at the Denver Co. show as Val had mentioned.  When inside, he uses an old antique electric motor to power it and when outside it's powered by a hit and miss engine.

Pratt also made gun drills.  When they started I don't know, but a company I once worked for in the '80s was still rebuilding them.  The ones I saw went to Ruger, I think.  Two heads in parallel on a single long horizontal bed.

I want to see how they cut those oval gears !

Thanks for the video. Has anyone figured out the oval gears?
Think the oval gears are to approach constant cutting speed.
Crank is slowest at the ends, fastest in the middle. Gears seem to slow it down in the middle and speed it up at the ends.
Just a guess, but that is what it looks like.
Chuck

The oval gears provided a quick return stroke, saving time on the job.

I saw that machine running in Denver.  The noise it made while running was kind of soothing, I thought.
