Thanks for the video Joe! It is as much fun to watch it as it was the real deal at Denver! I'd love to see it with the hit and miss motor too!

That thing is fascinating to watch. Thanks, guys, for those videos. Now, I'm going to sit back and watch the whole thing with a cup of tea. Cool

Joe I could watch it all day long I Love this kind of stuff. By chance did he happen to mention how the barrel blank was deep drilled and then reamed prior to the actual cutting?

JLouis

Pratt also made gun drills.  When they started I don't know, but a company I once worked for in the '80s was still rebuilding them.  The ones I saw went to Ruger, I think.  Two heads in parallel on a single long horizontal bed.

I want to see how they cut those oval gears !

Thanks for the video. Has anyone figured out the oval gears?
Think the oval gears are to approach constant cutting speed.
Crank is slowest at the ends, fastest in the middle. Gears seem to slow it down in the middle and speed it up at the ends.
Just a guess, but that is what it looks like.

The oval gears provided a quick return stroke, saving time on the job.

I saw that machine running in Denver.  The noise it made while running was kind of soothing, I thought.
