Which .25-20 was first? (Read 10134 times)

	This should maybe help clear up the question as to whether Marlin or Winchester came up with the .25-20 first! (You need to *Login* or *Register* to view media files and links) Notice the box is Winchester ammo, but marked ".25-20 Marlin". And then a label applied by Winchester stating, "Adapted to .25-20 Winchester M/92". Would guess if Winchester came out with the .25-20 first, they would add a label saying "adapted to Marlin 1889/1894? I just picked up a deluxe '94 Marlin so I was digging through my ammo looking for .25-20 ammo or cases to reload. Found two boxes marked .25-20 Marlin. The other is UMC. 	I don't feel a thing. I use the finest cases available. Winchester. Did those Marling folk ever make any?- don't count the Savage ones.

Pat, I've never used the 25-20 Short, so I'm not bothered there either. I do have the 25-20 Long, and the 25-20 Short's much older and slightly bigger brother in 32 cal.

	so, not being familiar with any of this, where does the 25-20 ss fit into all of this? I just bought a 1885 low wall in that cartridge.

	Here we go....................... blackpowder, your chambering is an earlier one first called simply 25-20, somewhere down the line came the one that is being called 'short' here. It was developed to function with existing case head (a winchester one ) and could be used in repeating rifles. So, you have what gets called 25-20 SS (single shot), and the later one sometimes gets called the 25-20 repeater. Both have their fans.

	Maynard chambered Rabbeth's wildcat, but it was Stevens that really commercialized it, and it was called ".25-20 Stevens" for a time. Was chambered in Winchester 1885s, which were marked simply .25-20, until Winchester came up with the .25-20 short. Now, the Stevens version was popular enough that there was still demand for it in the 1885, but Winchester wasn't ever going to stamp "Stevens" on their rifles or their ammo boxes, so they started calling it .25-20 Single Shot, and the name stuck.
