Thanks Chris one of these days I need to give BP a try and something that I have never done.

Black powder seems much easier to get good results in the .38-55 than in the .32-40.  I have had good results but the .32-40 is much more sensitive to bore condition.  It is enlightening if nothing else  Smiley

The best results were when completely cleaning the bore between shots, and then following with a lightly lubed patch.   I have more things to try with black powder and the .32-40, but ultimately I suspect that I might move over to smokeless for that cartridge and keep the BP for .38-55.

Chris, I did not work at it a lot, but my best results with BP in my .33 were ML and BS for smokeless.

OK, The twist in the Stevens-Pope is 1-14"  I have yet to slug bore, but it is a muzzle-loader with noticeable choke in last couple of inches near muzzle.

I have to agree with Fitz, Barry's design is great and the bullets will shoot but those one size fits all SEACO blocks are about 3 times too big.

Seaco Reloading made single cavity molds of the smaller block size that could be used with Lyman or RCBS handles. It was when Redding purchased Saeco that they started making single cavity molds using the 2 cavity blocks. 30 or 40 years ago there were few mold makers other than the fore mentioned. The major market is for pistol and gas check rifle bullet casters who prefer multi cavities. While I was with Saeco they were able to offer custom molds for the single shot/obsolete cartridge shooters as well as the pistol and gas check rifle shooters. Times have changed, today  the bottom line is more important than reasonable customer needs.

Maybe someone should design a padded extension for one handle that would rest under your forearm and turn your hand into a fulcrum that shifts the weight into an upward pressure on your arm.

Saeco even makes what they call a "magnum mold" which is a single cavity mold made with blocks normally used for a double cavity mold  Grin

I ordered the Saeco #732 from Buffalo Arms.  Yesterday did some casting with 25-1 & 20-1 lead-tin alloys.  Bullets coming out at .322-.3225.  The problem is, the Stevens-Pope slugs at .3230.  I have a custom Sabonis #322 tapered 200gr. that push seats really nice.  it cast .322 with 25-1, I used fine Cloverleaf compound & lapped base band, now drops .3225 with either 25-1 or 20-1.  Will lap some more for perfect fit.  What is your opinion on this..is .0005 under groove usable?   I can just barely see 8 very tiny pinpricks of light around breech-seated bullet.  Am thinking of using black also.  The Pope has noticeable choke near muzzle & has gain twist.  Any comments would be greatly appreciated!

If the bullet is not a thousandth or two over the groove when using smokeless powder you're wasting your time, jmho. Accurate molds will cut you a mold any diameter you need. Check out their online catalog for a bullet design and give it a go or design your own, very good folks to work with.

I think you'll be fine with a tiny bit under groove if you use black powder.  I assume that you are breach seating? Seating the bullet with a wad under it may help too.  I've never tried it with smokeless.
