Has anyone used the Saeco .32 tapered moulds in either 165gr. or 200gr.?  What is the nominal as cast dia. when using 20-1, 30-1 alloy?  Thanks!

When I found out SAECO was offering Tapered as in "Pope" style
I ordered 2 of each in 32-40,33-40,38-55. When they came the cavity's were really nice, clean and sharp. But the cavity blocks were LARGE as in big enough to be two or more cavity's. Needed to buy SAECO handles just to use them. Handles are 11" long. Big heavy Mold blocks at the end of a long handle. I am Old and Lazy. Tried one set and gave up in disgust. Too used to Original Ideal with handle and Blocks as an integrated unit. So gave up on them. Later sold/traded one of the 32-40 set to a friend and he used them successfully. Asked him at one point how they were shooting. He said great except that they showed serious tipping at 200 Yds. And every once in a while he would have one go through the Paper flat side way's. I asked about the weight, and he said 210.0 Grs.
I thought it a little just to heavy and measured the overall length. It was 1.050 Long. Now my bullets from a Pope Mold measure 1.0000 Long and weigh 193.0 Grs. So I setup the SAECO and machined  .050 off the Base. Came out to weigh
195.0 Grs, still tipped a little but no more side way's holes. So
how good are SAECO Molds. They are well cut cavity's and will cast good bullets. You will develop some muscle casting with them. HTH. Regards, FITZ. OLD TUCK Smiley

PS as to size the one we dealt with had a nice Taper and the base finished about .323/.324 as cast. It Breach seats  nicely
in an original Winchester Schuetzen and a Steven's Schuetzen
that he shoots. FITZ.

Thanks for good info..Yes I know too well just how heavy those Saeco moulds are.  Most of my shooting done at home club and limited to only 100yds.  I wonder how the 165gr. Saeco would fare?

What is your twist rate?

Someone here should know what gain twist rate was typical of Pope for the 32-40 and if finishing out at around sixteen a bullet length of .960 would be very appropriate.

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

I haven't used the Saeco tapered bullet molds, but have several other Saeco molds I do use often. One thing about the Saeco molds I own is they are some of the nicest workmanship on any mold I've seen.
The bullets drop out of the mold with less assistance than any of my other molds. I've got one .32 caliber that John Louis opened up the base band for me that never even gets bumped with my mold whacker. I open it and the bullet just drops out on it's own.

The 200 gr Saeco shoots very well in my 14 twist GM barreled High Wall and my 12.5 gain twist RKS barreled Ballard.  It did tip when I used a 16 twist barrel

Depending on the alloy the .965 in length Darr FN weighs approx.195 grains or less and it shoots extremely well in a 16 twist barrel and what it was designed for. It is also the same bullet I used to set the new ASSRA 100yd. 5-5shot group average and cylindrical he also made the same bullet with taper. Barry also still holds the ASSRA Benchrest, Centerfire, 50 shot average of 10-5 shot groups at a 100 yards of .449 set back in 1974. Barrel a Darr 16 twist and the bullet I believe was the same Darr FN cylindrical bullet that I used. If memory serves me right it is the 190B and one to keep an eye out for and if wrong hopefully Barry will jump in and correct me it's now been quite awhile since he told me the number.

Yea guy's. I did not mean to imply that the SAECO molds were poorly Made. Just that they were a Pain in the A$$ for me. I have gotten so used to the Ideal Molds that I could not get used to the weight and the cantilevered load over the long handles. I did recognize the Cavity quality. And the guy that got one from me has not complained. Regards, FITZ. OLD TUCK Smiley

Fitz I totally agree with you and I have converted my Hoch handles to be used with such mould blocks and it has turned them into a very nicely and well balanced setup and allot more of a pleasure for myself to use by far.

I actually enjoy casting with molds built with Saeco blocks, but then the majority of the molds I own use them.  I find that those tiny 200gr bullets keep the weight of the filled mold down  Grin Grin

I have tipping with the Saeco 200gr tapered bullet in my 1:14 twist CPA on cold wintery days at 200m.   Summer is fine.  I think this bullet has a bit too much taper for the rifles I use it in.  The front driving bands do not engrave the rifling at all.

I have the 165 gr Saeco tapered mold too.  I mostly use it in an original Winchester in .32-40.  In my CPA it does not shoot as well as the 200gr version.

Chris the 200 grain bullet should not be tipping what is your velocity my average velocity with the same per-say bullet in my 15 twist was 1474, where it has always shoot best and minus any signs of tipping. Sounds as if you might be down in the mid to upper 1200 range?

I'd have to look at my notes John, but you are likely correct as it's somewhere in the mid 1250's (black powder).
