Got this for the action.  The action is in the 14xxx range, the 45-70 barrel is  in the 33xxx range, slugs at .461 .  Any way to tell what model it may have started life as?   Haven't had it apart to clean yet.   Wood is well abused.  looks to have been blued over some minor pits

Ballard's "Gallery Peep Sight," intended principally for the #3 model. Useable, but not correct, for a Pacific. This one is the rare tall-staff variant.

No numbers on stocks,  the butt stock was epoxy bedded into the action.  Had a heck of a time getting it off.  Butt plate mismatched #.     Mechanically sound.  will post some questions in Gunsmithing once I get a few photos taken of the triggers.

Thanks for the info.

No way to know if any particular sight came from Marlin with that gun. But a buyer could order whatever style sight he wanted, so the Graduated Peep shown could be original to this Pacific. But being the tall version would make it more likely for centerfire larger cartridge gun.
"Graduated Peep Sight" is the terminology Marlin used for this sight in their catalog.

Companies changed their terminologies from time to time, but in the 1885 catalog, it was called a "Gallery." (Presumably because it was originally intended for the #3 or Gallery model.)  Giving the sight a number would have avoided confusion.

Until they decided to change the assigned numbers, as Winchester did with some of their sights.

Pretty sure the "Gallery" terminology was only used on the short version, and not throughout production.
Both Dutcher's book, and Brophy's book call them both "Marlin's Gallery Peep Sight" in the short version, and "Graduated Peep Sight" for taller versions. Also referred to in Marlin catalogs as "Peep Sight for Sporting Rifles".
The later version of the Graduated Peep with the thick base were referred to as the "Improved Graduated Peep".

But regardless of it's name, it would be appropriate for someone to order it in the tall version for a Pacific.

Since no numbers match on this rifle its a parts gun. Possibly a #5 Pacific possibly a #4. Look on the front of the receiver after taking off the forearm and if there are 2 pins sticking out chances are good its a Pacific.
